Any thoughts on Cakewalk vs. Cubasis? Ease of use, power, etc.? Guitar-and-vocals music, little or no keyboards, hopefully real drums, if circumstances permit. All input welcome.

Hi,
Specify what cakewalk product you are refering
to (Home Studio, Pro Audio9, Guitar Tracks etc).
Cubasis is an entry level sequencer that is
sometimes given away with other Purchases
(buy an Alesis Nanosynth for $179,get a
free Cubasis).
Cakewalk has products ranging from entry level
to Pro9. Comparing Pro 9 to Cubasis, they are
in Totally different leagues. Dont know much
about home studio. Cheers David

Cakewalk Home Studio and Steinberg Cubasis VST. I'm considering buying a Roland ED U-8 USB Digital Studio and it comes bundled with either of those software packages.

I checked out the U-8 on the edirol website. Jeez,
that thing looks like a lot of fun, like a digital
portastudio 8 track!! Before you buy however, do
some research on usb ports and audio. I have read
that some people dont like sending audio over usb.
I dont know why, I think its because of bandwidth,
and I have heard that USB cant handle a whole lot
of audio tracks, so keep that in mind.
But it sure looks cool, and I can envision someone
having tons o fun with that little machine.
I have Cubasis, but it doesnt have VST. I personally
hate it, but the VST is an interesting thing.
The interface on Cubasis is terrible. I have not
learned the Cubase format so well, but it is
very confusing, at least to me.
I played around with Cakewalk Home studio a while
back at a friends house, and we were able to
lay down some tracks in about 10 seconds, without
reading manuals.
I believe that both of them can be downloaded for
demos. Try em out and see what works for you.
I hope the USB ports work for you on the U-8,
because that looks like one amazing unit! David

It does look like a great machine, doesn't it? I read on audiomidi.com that the USB connection is only compatible with the Intel chip set, which gave me pause, since the computer I am hoping to use the U-8 with is an AMD machine. I have to research this further, but apparently Universal Serial Port ain't so universal. I have been told by AlChuck in another thread that USB can usually only pass two tracks at a time. That would be okay currently, but down the road I might regret it. Much to consider. I've decided to put off any purchase for a bit and keep researching and raising $$$.

If only people in the music area waited, like you
are, instead of barging to the store and buying
stuff, there would be a whole lot less $500
doorstops out there.
I am a pro violinist. Back in 86 (boy am I feelin
old) I went to the music store and they had
a Pitch to midi interface for 500 clams.
The Idea of playing violin into a mic and having it
come out as midi was overwhelming. The salespeople
at the store were telling me not to buy it, it
wont work. Take a guess what I did?
I dont even know what I did with that thing, but
may she rest in peace. If I had put that money
in the Stock Market<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< David

Cakewalk vs Cubasis
I've got Cakewalk Home Studio 9. I hate it. The on screen controls are hard to use, compared to Freestyle which I used on my old PC. I've had to convert all of my midi files to WAV files to burn cd's and there is a lot of resulting distortion in this conversion. In all fairness to Cakewalk, the problem could be my Compaq computer which I also despise. I'm currently using it for midi recording and the sound is bad. I'm currently considering using a USB interface for audio such as one of the Roland products or Tascam U 428. To use a product such as the Roland UA-30 USB audio interface, I would need a new USB port with an Intel chipset. I too thought USB was a universal standard! If I buy the UA-30, I'll have to upgrade and I don't know if the cost and hassle will be worth it if the sound quality isn't there or if there is some other resulting bug to mess things up.
