OK so I talk to the stores and all I get is what they are pushing; help! I'm just starting off, will be using keyboard, drums and whatever. Just need a simple (read: cheap price) basic software. Looking at Cakewalk Home Studio versus Cubase Se; but not sure which is the best and will offer opportunities for plug-ins for future expansion.

if you go to hitsquad.com you can download demoes of many different multitrackers for software for the windows pc - assuming you have one.
my personal favourites are n track, magix audio studio, traktion,
multitrackstudio.com,powertracks. all less than 100 bucks. all great.
or try the free audacity or kristal. btw - make sure you have a decent sound card.

Judging from the specs on the respective sites, I'd still go with HS2004.

-Cubase SE is limited to 48 audio tracks and HS2004 handles unlimited audio tracks.
-Cubase has no ACID loop support.
-Cubase only supports up to 8 audio input cards.
-Cubase seems to include stripped down versions of the softsynths that come with SX or SL. HS2004XL has full versions of VSC, Dyad, Dreamstation and other FX plugins.

Buy the one that's not copy protected. (Hint: Cakewalk products are not copy protected.)

I bought Cubasis a couple of years ago. I'm muddling through with it, but I wouldn't recommend it for the reasons cited by brzilian.
