cakewalk troubles

My Cakewalk software is started to go haywire lately. I have Cakewalk Music Creator (the original 2000 version.....sad I know....but I didn't have much money to spend), running Windows XP. It has served me faithfully for almost a year now, but now it's started to give me error messages and closing the program without warning. Today when I tried to mixdown a 5-track recording to .wav format, it got to 5% and gave me the error message: "Mixdown aborted." I never aborted it; it did it on its own.

It is only on this one particular file (I tried it on other files with success). It allowed me to mix down this file when it was a four track recording (3 guitar tracks and one vocal track), but then I added a piano track to it, and it won't let me mixdown anymore.

I did some experimenting, and this is what I found:
1) It is only this one file that gives me the error message
2) I tried deleting the piano track, and it worked
3) I muted the piano track, and it worked
4) I soloed the piano track, and it worked (surprisingly)
- All this gives me the impression that for some reason the program does not want this particular piano track to be mixed down with the others

FYI, for most all tracks, I record into a Fostex MR-8, and then upload the files into Cakewalk. Any help? I really, really don't want to have to buy another piece of software ($). I'm in the process of recording my band's cd with this thing.

if you want affordable alternatives - less than 80 bucks that i like
try the demoes sometime of magix music studio, powertracks (superb midi sequencer),ntrack. just talk to users on the respective forums.
with one of these you wont have the track limitation numbers of the fostex.
and you can do all recording and mixing on the pc provided you have a more than 1ghz system. preferably 2ghz. powertracks is only 49 bucks for 48 tracks. give it a whirl sometime. i think youll be surprised.

You are experiencing something strange indeed! Just for kicks, have you tried recording another new track on that song causing troubles? Sounds like something got corrupted somewhere along the line. I don't think trying new software or buying new software is the solution (and you said you really don't want to spend the money) - hopefully we can get this figured out for you so you can continue using your Cakewalk software (which generally works for you aside from this problem).

You said "upload" from Fostex to cakewalk? How? Sample rate / bit rate differences? Who knows? Check 'em out, shinemdm... :)

you said you could mix down the piano on its own (soloed) and also mixdown the other tracks without the paino? maybe try mixing the other 4 tracks down to one track and then opening a new project and inserting the mixdown and the piano track and mixing those two together.
