Hello all...

I am currently using Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 - and a drummer I hooked up with has a Roland vs2480. We're looking for ideas on how we can take projects from cakewalk and work with them on the Roland...and vice-versa.

Any thought's would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have a Vs880 in conjunction with a Mackie 1604 and Layla.
I assume on the 2480 you have spdif so you could snyc the computer and the 2480 to transfer 2 tracks at a time.
An easier and better way though would be to aquire a Layla,Delta 1010, or some other card with 8 inputs and outputs and using cakewalk go direct into the 2480. That way you can playback and record 8 tracks at a time.(Unless you have two Laylas etc. then you would have 16)
If you plan on transfering cakewalk files to another computer with cakewalk save them as Bun files.

Hey there Duck,

Thanks for the info - I don't know anything about the VS workstations (and the drummer doesn't really either - he just got it :)

But, do you know if it's possible to: Save the cakewalk ".wav" files to a CD and then "load" them on the VS2480? I suppose it might turn into a nightmare trying to re-arrange the files to get timing right, etc... but I guess i'm thinking along the lines of 'transferring files' rather than 'recording' over to... ya know what I mean...

The thing is that my computer/setup is in my "music room", and his is at his house. So transferring/recording directly from the computer would be sort of a pain (having to either move my stuff there, or his stuff here).... but will do, if need be.

Thanks again, any more thoughts are welcome.

I dont think you can, but as I said I have the VS880. Go to the vsplanet link and go to the 2480 forum. These guys will have more details than me. Its free just like here. Just register. This is the place to be if he is a new roland user. (Of course here also)

I have a few things you might be interested in on my page.

If he has a computer with a spdif soundcard and cakewalk, then he can record from cakewalk on his computer to the vs2480 directly with the CD you make up on cakewalk at your house.

If you have the 880, not the 880EX (880 has 4 inputs, 880ex has 6) then goto vsplanet and seach for "VS transfer" from Polarsonics.
It's what you need.

"VS transfer"
Your right Zoddman, the VS transfer will only work on the original Vs880.
But hes got a VS2480 so it wont work for him.;)

The cleanest way to copy (can’t really transfer) is through the spdif. Going through the normal analog route is going through the DA/AD converters, which will degrade more than the spdif route. The total time it takes to copy a song is the time it takes to listen to the song, two tracks at a time. If the song is 4 minutes with 12 tracks, it will take 24 minutes plus setup time.

Duck - Thanks for the links/info - I sent the drummer the link to VSPlanet as well.

Monty - I guess it doesn't seem so bad (time-wise) when you do the math on how long it will take to 'copy' a song... Thanks for the logic!! hehe

I'm not sure what he has for a PC at home - but I think we'll figure something out. I might have another soundcard w/ spdif connector I can give him.

Thanks again

Duh,
yeh 2480...
so assuming you have a cd burner attached, you can import wav and export to wav with 2480. Problem solved, assuming cakewalk exports to wav, which it must....

Zoddman - That's pretty much what I was wondering about the 2480... if it could 'import' or 'load' files off a CD... We'll be playing with it soon.

Thanks for your input.
