Cakewalk sucks. What’s a good replacement?

I get halfway through a song and the damn level settings start having a mind of their own. I’ve brought this to the attention of Cakewalk in the past and their solution is to take a snapshot of the project and rewind, or go into each track and draw level and pan settings. Like I set a track at a specific level with the console view, save, exit, then come back and the level is back where it was before I set it. This usually starts to happen when tracks have been edited and there are some track copies and such. Then today, along with that, there appeared an EQ patch on all tracks that I never put there. Like 14 EQ’s that just appeared out of nowhere. I’m sick of dealing with it. I've been using 9, and 8 before that, and I'm sure not going to waste my money on Sonar, because it will probably do the same thing. Is there anything decent at around the same price? Something that uses DX plug-ins so I can at least keep my effects? Did they ever address this level/pan setting problem in Sonar?

Never thought I'd see Monty here

If you upgrade to Sonar, You draw envelopes in the track view to control levels, pans, and even effects parameters (if the plugs support DX8 automation). You don't use that damn snapshot shit. It's a good system, try the demo.

I never heard of the magically appearing EQ's. If you delete them and save the project again, do they still appear?

haha....how dare u say cakewalk sucks in the cakewalk forum...don't u know we'll find where u live and burn ur house down?

PA9 is like a toy compared to Sonar. Try the Sonar demo on their website before you decide to start a flame war in a Cakewalk forum.

Monty, my recollection is that there is some default setting in PA9 that will automatically setup an EQ plugin for each audio track if you wish. I guess the theory behind it is to mimic an analog mixing board with an EQ control on each channel. I'm guessing you must have turned it on inadvertently.

It is controllable - i.e., you can choose to use the feature or not - but unfortunately I don't recall the specific steps for turning it off. Check out some of your Options menus, or try the help file. I tried to find it in Sonar, but they must have eliminated this feature (for good reason IMHO).

In the meantime, to answer your original question, I think you should look into Sonar. PA9 seems a bit like a toy next to Sonar.

Brzilian;

What flame war is this you’re speaking of?

All you other guys, thanks for your replies.

I had this problem with PA9. I e-mailed Cakewalk Tech., and they told me it was a problem with my installation of Win98. They (then) recommended to install another version of Win98 (like from another CD). I did, and the problem went away... So all I'm saying, try another version of Windows, it might work! :)
