came with my Aardvark card...

I am thinking about giving it a whirl...anyone use it and like it? I figure since it was free....maybe it'd be a good solution for audio recording..

24bit, good mixing interface...

those are really the only things that are important to me...

of course, stability....speed, what not. I have a nice computer.

hrmm, i dont even see pro audio 9 on their website..wtf.

I guess Sonar would be the logical choice then...

but, then its not free. hehe.

I found Cakewalk 9 to be very unstable. I tried to use it for my MIDI stuff before Samplitude got up to speed in that area. I didn't dig it at all. The updated interface was sure prettier than previous versions though.

I used it for years. For the most part it was a decent program for me (using Win98). It wasn't the most stable though, like jitteringjim said. I lost a few projects that I had worked very hard on and that's enough to make you lose your mind.

There are much better programs on the market these days. If you wanted to, you could use it for a while then upgrade to Sonar (the interface is very similar, but Sonar is more stable and has more features). The projects are upwardly compatible, so you'd be able to use your Pro Audio 9 projects with Sonar.

Personally, I'm a Nuendo guy these days, but everybody has their favorites.

I had no real stability problems with Pro Audio 9, and have continued to have no problems with SONAR. There are some annoying things in the interface and the slip editing thing can be a pain sometimes, but all in all I think it's a great tool.

I'm still using PA9, running under Win98SE with a Gadget Labs card. In the past 18 months I've had maybe 2 crashes that diddn't involve plug-ins. I've had probably another 4-5 that I could trace to a particular plug-in misbehaving. I also have an occasional playback "hiccup" which likewise I can trace back to plug-ins.

I'd say that for free it would be a damn hard deal to beat, you can do some fairly hefty work with it.
