Cakewalk Newbie!! (sound On Sound)

I am new to Cakewalk digital recording so, this might be a dumb question. I am having a problem understanding the tracking system. When I record a guitar on track 1 and then record bass on track 2 the, guitar is recorded on track 2 with the bass. The Cakewalk manual says that its like this by design but it tends to muddy everything up. I just want 1 sound per track not every track before that. If anyone can help life, would be alot better. I am ready for the Cakewalk multi-track exp. !!!

There is a box above the track screen where you can choose: overwrite, Sound on Sound, and Auto Punch. Make sure that you have overwrite selected. It's that simple. The manual...well...
 
I think your problem is more soundcard related than software. Are you using a Soundblaster Live? If you are, go to the mixer screen and disable or uncheck "Record what you hear". I think what's happening is that when you try to record bass while listen to the guitar you are re-recording what you are hearing.

Yeah, I bet PAPicker's on it... Lambert, he was talking about individual tracks, not the same track.

If your card is not an SB Live, the setting PAPicker's referring to might have a different name, like Mixed Input or something like that.
 
Thanks guys!! I have an old ensoniq sound so, maybe that is the poblem. I have a soundblaster live on backorder from Musicians Friend. I try everyones advice and see what happens.

You can try this (although it might be specific to SB Live).

Go to Control Panel and open the Sounds and Multimedia folder. Select the Audio tab. Under the section for Sound Recording click on the Volume button. From the pop-up window, go to the Options pull down menu and select Properties. Make sure the What U Hear button is not checked.

Don't know if that will work, but it should take about three minutes to try it.
 
I think it is my soundcard. So, basically I can't record until I get my soundblaster. Thanks to everyone for the help. As soon as I get the SBLive I'll update everyone.
