Cakewalk is NOT a cakewalk

....so far anyway.



OK, I am brand new to digital recording software, but not stupid when it comes to computers.

I have Cakewalk Home Studio 2004 and M Audio Quattro.

I have load the driver for the Quattro and I can get to its control/options select window to select ASIO or MME and sample and bite rates just fine.

The problem is that Home Studio is not reconizing the M Audio driver. It's not listing it as an option in the "Audio" drop down under drivers when I select ASIO. It also tells me that it cannot fing or use the drivers listed because they are not present or are being used by another aplication.

So. When I open a new project, I am not given any options for track input type. And I can't record anything.

I also get an error message about MIDI outputs have not been selected when I first open Home Studio from the desktop.

What am I doing wrong?

Do you have another sound card in your computer? I suspect this could be the result of a conflict between the two sound cards.

Try disabling the other sound card in Control Panel. Then delete your aud.ini file (or rename it) and start HS20004. See if it will recognize it this way.
 
Have you enabled the drivers in the options/audio/drivers menu?
 
And what's your Windows? 98? ME? XP?. I've heard many trouble stories with USB devices in Win98/ME... Correct me please :)

The Quattro is an absolute POS with terrible drivers. There have been posts after posts here and elsewhere of people complaining about the Quattro interface. Do your research before thinking HS2004 is the cause of the problem (which it is not in this case).

after many hours in front of my PC, I sovled the problem.


It was a combination of problems.

When you load the driver for Quattro, or I should say when you think you loaded the driver for Quattro, you're not quite done.

Quattro has several drivers that have to load seperately. Why they can't make the software load all at once is stupid.

You have to run install wizzard 3 times to get all of quattro drivers installed. There is a driver for in/out 1 & 2, a driver for in/out 3 & 4 and a driver for the MIDI in/out. They don't tell you that in the instructions. Bastards.

And for CAKEWALK, and using Windows XP, when you register you name in the install wizzard for homestudio, you MUST BY ALL MEANS NO EXCEPTIONS use the same name that you use for you Windows XP logg in or you can't access the sound card drivers from Homestudio drop downs.

Everything worked fine on my Desktop, but there was an output problem with the software on my laptop. I expect XP was the culprit and found a patch that fixxed that. So now it all seems to be doing OK for now.

Homestudio will do all the stuff I want to do, but just getting everthing installed was a pain in the ass and wasted a lot of my weekend.

Or you can save your money, go through the tutorials and play with it.

You will learn faster by doing than by reading and there are plenty of free information resources on the internet for all cakewalk products.

So far, I
m pleased with HS2004. Like I said, getting everything on the computer took longer than I thought, but I have already recorded sum things that sound better than anything I've done with my old 2 input cassette 4 track.

I REALLY like the fact I can save the project and edit or add stuff later without search thru miles of tape.

I also like that I can copy a project to CD and mail to freinds who also have HS2004 so they can add their tracks.

Unlimited possibilities. And the price of HS, the sound card and blanks CDS is a LOT cheaper than studio time. Especialy for experimenting and working out ideas.
