I just got home studio 2002 and i wanted to get the the patterns from my alesis sr-16 into some tracks in cakewalk. First, should I do it through midi or audio? I want the drums sound how they do on the sr-16, unless there is a way to make them sound better in hs2002. I noticed in sonar some people allocate a track for each voice on the drum machine, is this ok to do in hs2002 also? Second, should I make a groove loop for every drum machine pattern or is it best to just record the whole song (in the drum machine) even though the patterns loop over and over again? Any feedback will be appreciated.

It's a matter of preference on how you like to work. Personally , I try to avoid midi whenever possible. End result, you'll have to patch it back in and record it an audio track when you're done anyway. If you're comfortable enough programming your drum machine, I'd stick with that (that's what I do).

It may be a matter of preference, but the fact is, if you record it as MIDI data you have far more flexibility. You can trigger any MIDI drum machine that you can get your hands on, or, better yet, split it up and use one machine for the kick (becuase its kick is great while the rest is so-so), another for the snare ('cuase its snare sound is awesome though the rest of its sounds are nothing to write home about). Or load up a sampler with your favorite hand-picked sample for each part of the kick and trigger that. You can also copy parts from one part of the kit to another, or even to other instruments. Sure you have to eventually record it to audio to make a CD, but why not later rather than sooner?

You could sync the SR-16 (as the SLAVE) to Cakewalk.

Why bother with synching when you can get the whole song over to the computer sequencer? It's so much easier than saving patterns and linking them into songs... soooo much easier...
