Cakewalk doesn't support my soundcard's midi output but other midi softwares do

I have this problem on both of my computers. Two types of soundcards. When I check the midi devices in Control Panel>Audio, my midi devices are "MPU-401" and "Microsoft GS Wavetable". The Microsoft one can properly generate midi music on all my other midi softwares: Finale 2003, MidiNotate, Music Masterworks, Winamp. But Cakewalk(any version) says "No Midi outputs are selected". So does that mean I can't use Cakewalk on this soundcard?

Wait a minute, I just realized that midi is not supported by a soundcard but a certain installed software. So can I maybe download something to get it fixed? Such as a wavetable.

once you get past the midi warning thrown by cakewalk, doesn't it ask you if you want to assign midi outs?

cakewalk doesn't follow the midi "suggestion" that you select in the OS, you've got to tell cakewalk what midi ports to use.
