Anyone know of a good resource for the applications and installation of audio/video cables and connectors? You know, the uses of various cable and connector types (XLR, BNC, DB,RJ), techniques and tools used for installation. I’m applying for a job that involves this area and I want to read up on it.

Thanks!

If you search on Google for Video Connector Guide a bunch of stuff comes up from different manufacturers.

When I was doing video work it seemed like all the pro gear used BNC which is just a better coaxial/phono connector. Many of the studio cameras use multi pin DB cables (can't remember numbers and there are a few different sizes) for remote control of the iris and sending back video signals to the camera monitor.

Start checking out the manufactors, switchcraft, neutric, amphenol, etc. Sony might have some on SDI, RS-232/422, firewire and so on.... Cable manufactors like Belden has a lot of info about cable types, lengths, odds and cons.....

Welcome to the world I'm trying to get out of.....

Start checking communication sites too.

All I know about what you've listed it that a BNC connector with the right cable will handle over 6 Gig, well up into the microwave Q range.

A PL259 plug and SO239 jack will handle about as much with more loss, but will handle a much greater wattage load, depending upon the cable used.

RJ connectors are typically used for telecommunication intallations as well as some computer networking installations. Many are going to a coaxially based interconnect.

F fittings if your are not familiar with them, are what is on the back of your TV set that connects it to your satellite dish or cable network. These can typically handle up to over 3Gig and up to about 300 watts without too much loss, again depending upon the cable used.

You already know about XLR cables and connectors.

There are many, many different cable types dependent upon intended use. And there are all kinds of grades for all uses.

Check out Belden's site if you need to know this info too.

Thanks guys. I'll check out some of these sources.

rambo, what do you do for a living?
