So, I didn't get a ton of interest from anyone to buy one of my AKG D-19s outright, but I did trade one for a Josephson C42.
I've tried it out just a bit. So far, I've just used the Sound Devices MixPre as a preamp, which is a top of range portable field mixer. Here are my thoughts on the mike...
1) I really like the sound of this mike. It has a good strong high end boost, but manages to still sound smooth, not harsh. I can get the same breathy, airy tone on my vocals that I could get with the D-19, but it's a cleaner, more detailed sound. Very nice on acoustic guitar and the percussion instruments I tried it on.
2) It's a nice complement to the ruler flat sound of my SM-81s and SM-80s. It should help tracks come forward in the mix.
3) It's significantly noisier than the SM-81 and SM-80, especially in the mid-band. The spec is 21 dB (A weighted) versus 16 dB for the SM-81 and 17 dB for the SM-80 capsule. It only matters on relatively quiet sources, but there... it matters.
4) I like it on drum overheads. Bright, but not harsh like some SDCs can be.
5) It's tiny. And light. Less than four inches long and less than three ounces.
6) I kinda wish it had a built in high pass filter setting or two, but I can get by using the ones in the preamps.
7) It's time for David J to make the C41 omni version, too. Preferably with interchangeable capsules. And then he can do the C43 figure 8 capsule, too.
Cheers,
Otto
