i tried using my AKG c 1000 s for and overhead drum mic and i seem to be getting some major distortionon just about every other snare hit, has anybody else had this problem? i have used my c 3000 b for the same application and it seems to work well. maybe that's cause it has a -10dB switch on it? any opinion is appreciated. thanks!

It's an ordinary mic with ordinary response. If you're getting distortion, cut the gain, turn down the level, reduce the volume. I know at least one guy on this board who is getting ACE drum sounds using ordinary mics on drums, and without any compressor, either. Do you have a meter on your mixer or in your software, so that you can check levels before you actually commit yourself to recording?

yes, i use a yamaha md8 and have the meter going up to about -6. i read you should be recording as hot as you can without clipping.

As hot as you can without clipping is a good approach, yeah. But if you're clipping when you record, then maybe you're hitting the drums harder when you actually start tracking than you did during the levels test. I've heard engineers say drummers do this all the time, so they accommodate by turning the levels down even more than the meters indicate. This'd be the first thing to try, especially if you can get a buddy to meter levels while you're actually tracking.
