C1 - cat's pajamas or ass?

Well, let's find out.
It would be nice if the respondents here actually had used the C1, not just basing decisions on second hand experiences and rumor like so much of the information posted here.
 
It's a good mic. Useful. Good vocal mic where the output doesn't immediately strike you as great, but has a nice way of falling into the mix well...

agreed even tho it's the only LD mic I own. It sounds really good for voiceover.

Definitely one of the better options in the $200 and under bracket. Not overly versatile, but a good vocal mic.
 
What's so magical about the model number C1? There are three companies I know of that have a C1 model.

Waves: C1 Compressor plug-in
TL Audio: C1 Compressor
SP: C1 Microphone

Can anyone explain this phenomenom?

I use the C-3, and it's a very useful mic worth every penny I paid for it. Is it a *great* mic? No. It is, however, an excellent tool at it's price point that delivers. I guess I was never sucked in by the weirdo reviewers who thought it was a U87 equivalent, so I got what I expected.
 
Very good vocal mic, however, I fall into the percentage who sound better on the B1. YMMV.

Any more opinions? I myself don't have the mic, so I didn't vote. Looks like most people have been quite satisfied with it, so unless there are more votes it looks like the "797 Audio/Studio Projects C1" is somewhere close to the cat's pajamas, but far away from the skivvies.
 
You won't find a better general vocal mic for $200 or under than the C1, period. Believe me, we've tried.

chessparov, being that you sound better on a B1, have you tried the Audio-Technica 4003, 4040 or 4050 or the AKG 414 on your voice?

I have a C1 and a B1. I think they are both good mics.

I think the C1 is a good vocal mic on most male voices. I think the B1 is a good instrument or amp mic.
 
Good mic, I record a female vocalist who sounds bad on it, but works well for many.

I'll echo the above sentiments.

For what I paid for it, I think it's great.

Is it the best mic available? No.

But for $199, it sounds really good on male voices and some females.

Regardless of who makes it.
 
Dot, sorry not to get back to you sooner.

The AT4033 accentuates nasality in my voice.
The 414 B/ULS empathizes sibilance.

The B1 is "clean", but there's no issue with nasality or sibilance (due to the mic!).

Haven't tried any others out of AT's 40 series BTW.

Had the C1, was impressed, but had an issue with how it picked up sibilance.
To be fair, this was not the fault of the microphone. The top end of my voice is bright and there are certain "dental" :) problems.

Horses for courses...
