I am planning on making my own studio and creating and producing hip-hop music. I only have about 2k to spend atm and i do not know where to start. I am starting from scratch.

I have been researching many components to beat making etc, and I want to buy an MPC if that is a good place to start.

I just need to know if this is a good place to start and also what else I will need along with the MPC to be able to create my music. I am using a Mac OSX as my computer(I don't know the technical term).

Also, can I put the sounds created on the MPC on a program like logic or protools.

Thanks and sorry for sounding like a N00b

you could get an mpc and you could make beats with it, but instead I would recommend a midi keyboard/control surface you will have more possibilities with it. Aside from that, all you need is a program. i use and love propellerhead Reason. you can get reason and a nice keyboard for well under 2k

Well hey , its all right to be noob , i am still a noob but i already passed thru tis

I am writing this , because you said you are starting from scratch.

If you setting up a small gig in your room or something like this. This would be the most basic setup probably.

A PC
( pc = personal computer ) can be a Windows pc or mac Pc your choice

A midi keyboard ( to acesss the midi sounds and instruments in the software and play it , like piano , synth , guitar and various other instruments in the software can be triggered thru this midi keyboard )

Decent pair of Monitors ( i suggest Krk Rokit 5's as you seem to have budget for it )

Thats pretty much it for a basic production setup , as you get better you will add pro stuff later.

the best thing would be , buy a M-audio axiom 61 ( semi weighted midi keyboard ) i like how it feel , not too light or too heavy. Its great for making piano melodies, synth , and all the stuff.

If have budget you can definitely buy a mpc , yes you can record the stuff from mpc to software ( i am not 100% sure tho )

But if you are just buying a MPC for drums and chopping samples , you can use MPD 26 or 32 , they are midi controller. They dont have memory or card slots etc like MPC and can only be used via software.

you'll need a ...........

Computer,

an interface,

software,

And microphones.

Oh and talent....and I'm sure you have that or you wouldn't be here on a quest.

Hi,

It is good advice buying a computer and software, but don't be put off from buying an MPC. I have a MPC1000 and used t use it live on stage with an electronic dance music band. A lot of dance music and hip hop producers love the MPC's due to the live performance feel both on stage on in the studio that you get with them. They can sequence and sample and you can perform live arrangements on the fly. We were using ours as a sequencer to a drum module and a sampler of vocal, guitar and string parts that we sampled of ourselves in the studio, we also had a lot of interesting samples of voices from movies and on the street stuff.

However if you also have a computer and some software you can work stuff both ways, you can load samples that have been worked over on the computer into the MPC and vice versa, you can also play the sequence from the mpc into the computer or slave the mpc from the computer. The MPC1000 plugs into the computer as a USB device and is seen as a drive so transferring file back and forth is a breeze.

What I would do if the budget allowed is to get a second hand MPC1000 and buy a computer as well. If you can't get the 1000 look for a cheap mpc500.

Cheers
Alan.

Thanks a lot everyone, I think I'm going to go with the keyboard and monitors first then an MPC later in the game.

One last question.. how will I connect the monitors and keyboard to my Mac?
