Sounds fine.... I don't know what mics and pres you're using, but I don't know that upgrading there is going to give you stupendously different results.

Maybe there's something else in your signal chain that needs the love a little more.

well im using a:

mxl 990 condensor mic
behringer shark dsp1100 pre

it sounds the way it does thru TONS of editin....but like i said i have sold both of them with my old computer...

for 6 or 700 maybe look into a GT brick tube pre and a gt55 LDC mic. thats what i would go with for a nice warm sound with nice clear lows. IMO

Mics & Preamps

I did a vocal session on a female gospel singer in which I used three different mic preamps and two MXL V67 mics in a stereo configuation. The MXL V67 street price is $99.00.

I did four tracks of the same vocal and the result is as follows:

Trident S-20 Track 1 Sounded OK $1,000.00

D&R Mic Amp Track 2 Sounded much better $ 495.00

Neve Portico Track 3 Sounded the same as D&R $1,440.00

Neve Portico with "Silk" switch on. Track 4 Sounded Great. And yes, it sounded better than the D&R Mic Amp.

Note: I think with a little High Freq EQ and the D&R Mic Amp I can duplicate the Neve with the "Silk" switch on.

As for the MXL mics, I have several MXL V69 Tube mics and I compared one with a Neumann U87 and the result was the U87 sounded dull. I then tried the Manley Gold Ref ($5,500.00) next to the MXL V69 ($299.00 street price) and the manley sounded like it had a quilt over it. I've tried the MXL mics against several different C-12s, different Neumann U87s, and Neumann 149. The MXL mics won out every time except one U87 I ran across that had ben modified.

...for rap/hiphop vocals I'd have to second the recommendation for the GT Brick mic pre, but I'd prefer the Rode NTK tube mic with it...the NTK has a very distinct sound that seems to do very well with rap style vocals...of course, if you can audition the mic before buying, that would be the way to go...a clean used NTK goes for about $300. and the Brick new is $399...I've used this combination on a number of Reggae Dancehall tracks (which is very similar to rap in terms of dynamics) with excellent results...

Hi Paul, Have you tried the newer MXL V6 Silicon Valve ? Wondering how it is. Also, did you swap the tube in any of your V69 ? Thanks.

Hey prw...You should send that u87 to tony merrill.
thatll cure the dullness. :D

We got the V6 a week or so ago. It works good on some voices, but I think it might be even better for sax and acoustic guitar. I'll know more this month after we put it to work.

Yes, I've tried the V6 in several studios. It sounds simulair to the V-69. I have several on order and hard to keep the V69, V6, and V67Gs in stock. FYI, the V6 Silicon is made in the US.

All of the MXLs tested were stock, however, Ralph Skelton (my sound Guru) has a V67G I sent to him to replace several components and make it sound much better (although it sounds great stock). I hated the color of the V67G until I made a trip thru South Texas and showed it and other MXL mics at several studios and most bought the V67G. After using it, I really like it for cost v performance and now I like the ulgy green (well.... a little better). Even if the V67G costs much more, I would still buy several. I will market a Modified version of the V67G in a few months.

If I had the extra cash, I would buy V69s and V6s but still have several V67Gs.

...The V6 is much better suited to guitar miking (acoustic in particular) than it is for vocals...the V69 and V76 both do a better job on vocal tracking...no doubt, the V67, V69 and the V77 (no longer manufactured) are MXL's best mics for vocal tracking...

Whoa, I'm a little confused, Paul (a not uncommon state for me). Are you a dealer for MXL mics, or a customer? You're not listed as a dealer on the MXL website.

I find it amazing that a D&R rep would find his own mic pre to be as good as a Neve in a totally self-conducted, unscientific, and unbiased (cough!) listening test. :D
