... the only reeaaally cheap condensers that i've come across that seems ok to me are the oktava mk319 and the studio projects b1. i've heard that the mxl mics sound ok as well and seem to be in your price range. at just under $200 (and cheaper used), the at3035 would work fine too. not to sound bossy, but you really should use the search function or browse the other threads... the suggestions i just made have been made 1000 times, and i think we're probably about to hear them yet again.
my 2 cents on the akg c1000: not a good vocal mic, ok as overheads. different mics sound different on different voices, through different pre's, in different rooms, and on and on. do some checking around.
good luck - jv

Getting a "nice professional sound" may require spending a bit more, but there are certainly a wealth of very pleasant condensers under $200. Microphone selection often depends on your voice and vocal style. I second the suggestion that you avoid the C1000s. Here are some to try out:

Studio Projects: B1, B3, C1 (all three of these mics have a good reputation)
MXL: V67G, 2003
Audio Technica: AT3035
MAudio: Luna
CAD: M179
Rode: NT1

You might get a nice professional sound out of a C1 or an SM7 or a 57 depending on the rest of your signal chain and your engineering skills

AKG C2000B is very close to the price of the C1000S, but unlike the C1000S, is a perfectly good vocal mic, in it's price range. C1000S has a wicked brittle high end making it usable mostly for snare drum. Singing into one is a process in pain.-Richie

i actually owned a c2000 and found it to be a bit brittle as well, and i like'm crispy on my voice (kinda smooth and full, if i'm allowed to say so) just thought i'd pass along my experience with it.
good luck - jv

No doubt, vocal mics are like shoes. They either fit or they don't. I haven't found the vocalist yet that sounds good through a C1000S.-Richie

Do not buy the AKG C1000S

I've owned an AKG C1000S for 9 years and have used it for recording vocals (both loud and soft) and acoustic & electric guitar. I'd purchased it after reading reviews in music publications and feel that it's a nearly miserable recording mic for those aplications.

Save a few dollars and purchase one of the condensers recommended on this site.

Two uses I've found for the C1000s is recording my squareneck resonator and it's ok on harmonica as long as you don't crowd it. It was a disappointment on vocals. Like you I bought mine after reading reviews but also because it operated off of a 9 volt since I didn't have phantom power at the time. I wish I had known about this bbs before.

There are one or two other SDCs that run off batteries but I wish I'd known about them before getting my C1000S. After two years of wondering why it was always horrible I sold it off at Christmas.
