Probably due to the 2002's being very different from the in stock 2001s.....

According to the Les Paul Forum,
The new Standards have Kluson tuners instead of Grovers, different peghead, nickel hardware instead of chrome, pups that are close to being burstbuckers instead of the 490/498s and they have flame tops instead of plain tops......

I would imagine dealers wanting to close out the old, however, I also heard the new ones are gonna be the same actual retail as the 2001s were............so the sale prices on the 2001s will be a good deal, but, sheesh, when everybody sees the new ones they're gonna gripe that they didn't get the 2002.......gibs
 
Thats because they have gone to the dogs and nobody wants them. ES335s are the guitar of the future.
 
the problem is the prices continued to rise to the point where they were unattainable for a lot of players, or prospective players
I think they turned away a lot of potential customers

chrisbs, I take it you sell guitars and things.....after looking at the link....(which is pretty spammy of you, actually)...equally obvious is that you don't offer LPs......, so my question is, are you exclusively a business that excludes Gibsons (other than mandolins) because of your choice, or do you have an agreement with Fender not to?....I'm not trying to bait you, I honestly would like to know......

LPs and American Strats/Teles are different animals....all very good......

Nobody pays retail for either brand....the Gibsons will be higher in cost because of the carved tops/binding/finishes.....

Both brands have serious mojo........

I know of a site where an LP Standard can regularly be had for $1404, including shipping and hardshell case......which is not all that much more than the Strat listed on your site...By the way, what is "MN" that is used to describe the Texas Special?...

Spend the money and get a custom Les Paul.They are like night and day.I have a custom 57 reissue and there isnt a finer guitar that I have played in ths 25 years I have been playing.Mine is a "black beauty" and retails around 4000,can be had online for 2500, and I stole mine for 1800.Mine is the 3 pickup model and just screams.Gibson is back,BIGTIME!!!!
 
I wonder if that Custom57 black beauty was the one that was stolen from Jimmy Page in 1970 at the time of their 1st album,at an airport,someone swaped it ...out of curiosity...!!

I see that Musician's Friend is selling standards at $1600, whereas Mars still wants over $2100. What a joke. The site to which gibs was referring still kicks all their asses.

The Gibson site provides specs on the old Standards. If all this is true about the radical changes to the baseline model, then Gibson is overdue for a website update. Where can I get some scoop on the 2002 models?

Notice no pickguard...you have to put one one yerself.......I can't imagine a Paul without a guard though...scratch-city.......

interesting. let's see what this does to the current Standard's price over time, as another collectable.

Only time will let the smoke clear on this debate, and I'll bet that playability and sound will have little to do with the outcome. somehow it'll be marketing strategy, guitar player endorsements, and rumor that will shift general opinions one way or the other. watch how many just go with the flow.
