Greetings,

Is a DAT, cuppled with an older mixer and a ultra high end CD player OUTDATED as compared to what a half decent computer can do? Will todays computer sound BETTER than a DAT?

What should I do, invest in my computer, or buy a DAT?

Cheers

Well, I have both. I still get some mileage out of the DAT (mostly backwards compatibility) but a computer with a decent 24 bit soundcard will easily outperform it. Not only can you record at the higher bit depth but you can edit. That alone does it for me.

Thanks for the reply. So what do I need as hard/software to get going properly, the minimum that is?

I have a PII 350 128 ram, so I'm in deep s**t. I will probably need to upgrade my whole computer, or buy a new one.

If you just want to do two track stuff, your computer is more than up to the task. Software wise, SoundForge 5 (the newest version 6 is out now) is a great two track recorder/editor. Soundcard wise, search around the site here. There's TONS of info on great Two track soundcards.

I would suggest the same things as Track Rat.

You can get some info on Sound Forge at their site.
