Buttons keep popping up! (Can't record)

Hi -
I have a Fostex Multitracker XR-5. The buttons keep popping up during play, record, rewind, etc. It's been suggested that it is "dirty" and that I could clean with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol (or something else). Is this just a sign of a dirty tapedeck? I'd like to try something simple if possible before I send it off for repair. This is a new problem, wasn't always this way -

Normally, buttons will do that only if the recorder has reached the end of the tape.....or at least thinks it has . Could there be something causing restriction to the tape as this could trigger the "stop" mechanism.

If it is happening all the time I would seriosly consider having it serviced.
