jus a quickie... if you routed all drum mic channels to one channel, like a bus does, then this fader brought down would bring the overall volume of the drum kit down, is this right? without affecting the acual mix of each drum mic? also, if this was to be done on a mixer, are seperate cables needed to route each one into the channel, or is it an internal component which does this?
thanx in advance, steve

If youre talking about sub-mixing,....then route your drum mic channels to a pair of busses and use them in stereo.(pan hard left and hard right)

Then,..those 2 busses would be your sub-mix and yes,..if you bring the faders down it will reduce the volume of the whole kit.

I read your question like 6 times,..as near as I can tell,...your talking about sub-mixing. If not then,...well,..I'm not really sure what it is youre trying to accomplish.

Take 'er easy,..

1st off, if you tracked the kit, lets say on 4 tracks, you would defeat the purpose of any stereo panning by bussing all 4 tracks to 1 channel. Repeating Calwood's statement, bussing to 2 tracks would allow for, again let's say, panning the hihats, ride/crash , left and another ride, floor tom, wood-block etc right. Your board s/b equipped with the basic routing of track 1 & 2 to Group L and trks 3 & 4 to Group R.

What mixing unit are you using?

haha yeh sorry if it wasnt very clear, rather than me needing to know, it was more just checking up on what busses can do, the two buses for left and right does make sense yeh, but my question was purely just to check that a bus did what i thought it did! thanx for the info anyway guys, appreciated!
