Do I need the roland burner to burn from the VS recorders, or can I use a stand alone cd recorder like a phillips to burn my cd's?

Any CD recorder that has S/PDIF inputs can be used for recording audio from the VS,however if you want to back up the data on your VS Hard drive, the official Roland burner is what I'd use (and do).

Thanks very much for the reply virtual ray. One more question though, how about recording with an optical digital cable?

Well, the Roland has both optical and coaxial(RCA) S/PDIF outputs,so you should be able to use either one.BTW,I'm talking about the VS-880EX,I don't know what the story is with the 840.

Ray! I know it's a different beast, but do you know if the same CD-R stand-alone burning is true with the Korg D-16? Their specs say that mastering needs to go to DAT or MD through the S/PDIF and to CD-R or through the SCSI. Thanks for any help on that!

Quoi,Ma Guelle,Qu'est Qu'elle a Ma Guelle?

I've never operated a D16,so i can't say for sure, but it would seem to me that if they're telling you to master to either MD or DAT through S/PDIF,there should be no reason you couldn't plug a CD recorder in and use it the same way 'cause the Korg wouldn't know the difference.

I am making an assumption here, but my guess would be that all the digital recorders out there have some form of digital out. I was going to look into getting the Phillips 775 Dual cdr thinking that I could record down to one cd for my master and then make copies for distribution. After I found out that this unit has no way of turning off the SCMS security coding, I would not be able to accomplish this. I am just making this post so that you are aware of the situation. I would recommend going with a pro cdr (providing you got the bucks). Maybe some day I will.

CDRW-700

Yeah, you gotta consider the total cost not only in dollars but also headaches.SCMS sucks big time.Wait 'till One of the big chains has a six month no interest deal and get the Tascam, you can defeat the SCMS and it does other tricks too.

Yeah, I've got the TASCAM CDRW700 and it is SO easy to use...and I can make digital copies of my cds. Worth the bucks, any way you can manage it. :)
