Burning CDs in PA 9

There has got to be an easy way to burn a project from PA9 straight to CD and be able to listen to it, right?

I've been using mixdown to mix it to one track, and then mixing it down to wav form. Then I have to bring it into Samplitude, and convert it to MP3. Then I've been using Jam on my Mac to burn the thing to CD.

I know I'm doing things wrong, but my CDs don't want to play when I simply export my stuff in wav form and then burn it.

What should I be doing? I just want to burn the project and listen to it on my CD player!!!!

You are doing one too many conversions. If I understood you correctly you are converting wav to MP3 then MP3 to CD format?

Converting to MP3, using the MP3 compression algorithm causes loss of fidelity. thats why MP3 is described as being "near CD quality". By then converting to CD, this perpetuates the fidelity loss and may make it worse.

When I export to wav, I use ADAPTEC's Easy CD creator software to burn my CD's. This eliminates the MP3 conversion completely. I am not sure sampleitude is able to convert wav to CD's. You should be able to get Easy CD creator from somewhere, it comes with almost every CDR under the sun, if not try their web site.

There is no method of creating "Red Book" format CD's (international standard for audio CD's) direct from CW.

I've tried using Easy CD creator, and still, the CD will not play.

Are you using the Audio CD option, or the Data CD option. If you burn .wav files as data they won't play in an Audio CD player. You need to burn an Audio CD. EasyCD will convert the waves to Red Book Audio format during the burning process, which should allow the CD to be played in a standard stereo CD player.

If they still won't play, there may be problems with the brand of blank CD-R you are using, or with your burner. (BTW, I assume you are using CD-R's and not CD-RW's. CD-RW's will not play in MOST CD players.)

I had a similar problem when I first started burning audio CD's.

Now, I first make a CD image on my hard drive and then burn CD's from that.

No problems since I started doing it this way..

Just my 2¢...

I don't get it. I'm using the Audio option in the program, and I'm using CD-R discs. The thing is, when I burn it as an MP3 in another computer, it will play the CD on a stereo. Audio stuff burned from my computer wont play back.

By the way, how does one make an image, and burn it this way?

Make suer that you use these options.. in Adaptec for best results . Burn at 4X or below that will ensure that you have less errors.. Be patient. Use DAO mode (Disk At Once) close all programs before you start you burn.. I usually restart and then don't touch a thing after you start.. For my final Mixes I burn at 1X

And be sure that your session are closed..

Just a few thoughts. for ya

Busted Kitty,

Are you saying that you have a CD player (not a computer CD) that will play MP3's? Very curious. And unusual.

Paul881,

Actually not so unusual any more... there are many portables now that play both standard audio CDs and data CDs with MP3s on them. The current crop of DVD players play DVDs, standard audio CDs, data CDs with MP3s, VideoCDs...

AlChuck,

Well bloody hell, you learn something new every day. I'll go try it out on my daughters new Sony. Thinking about it, we got 11 CD & 1 DVD players in the house, I'll go try MP3's on all of em. Never thought to try before.

What would be really cool would be to find that the one in my car could play MP3's on a CD-RW disk. But I guess life ain't like that:)

Paul - You might want to take a look at this site: http://www.cruthfield.com/

then click on the link for Car Audio and Video, and then the quick link for CD/MP3 players. Your wish has been granted (except for the fact that one of these is probably not already installed in your car :) ). BTW, some of them even play .wma files in addition to .mp3's.

However, I'm holding out for one that will also tuck me in at night.

Dachay, how weird. Cruthfield is spelled wrong on their own address, yet the link still works!! I tried www.crutchfield.com and that works too. I guess so many people mispell their name that they intentionally have a mispelled address.

Dachay, how weird. Cruthfield is spelled wrong on their own address,

David, yeah I noticed that too. I just copied and pasted the address and noticed the misspelling. I actually went back to check it again, since I couldn't figure out how a copy & paste could result in a misspelling. But as you found out, it works either way.

This reminds me of a story. A couple of years ago some online toy store was selling those Pokemon toys. However, they weren't selling very many and couldn't figure out why, since the product was red hot.

Short time later they were looking at some data regarding the most frequently searched terms on their web site. Number 1 search term was Pokeman (rather than Pokemon). Once they taught their search engine to recognize Pokeman and to redirect customers to the right toys, their sales went through the roof.

Goes to show, you better know what your customers are asking for.

Still no success in getting things to play back. I have tried everything short of reinstalling all software. (I don't want to lose everything!!!!)

Any other ideas?

Here's a few things to try.

1) Burn at a slower than max speed. Try 1/2 the speed of the burner. You get a more even burn.

2) Check the manufacturer of the CD-RW drive for a flash rom upgrade (brains of the drive). It's good to keep in mind if you have any odd problems with the CD drive.

3) Try different manufacturers of the blank CD-R disks. I have experienced first hand. My laptop has problems with some CD-R's I have burnt.
