I am want to get into making beats for hip-hop and rap perhaps some R&B. All beside the point. I have various drum machines and keyboards but i am now at the point where i'd like to create a nice system to record on at home. I took a year long internship a small studio near my home. I worked with pro tools hd so i have decide that the rack is a good place to start. My biggest question is the computer i should get to run the system. I know something like a Mac G5 is the obvious answer but will i lose that much performance by going with something a little more affordable? If so any suggestions?

I run a G4 mac mini with a 002 Rack. I would advise you to get a G5 if possible. I have had very little trouble with my mini / PT at low / mid sample rates, but @ 96Khz it gets a bit spluttery. Again if I have >15 tracks all with real time compression, EQ etc this too is spluttery. G4 is passable but G5 will have absolutely no probs. I'd love the extra processing power / RAM now!
