building bass traps

I got some Johns Manville Insul Shield insulation and some MDF to create some bass traps (and the MDF will act as a reflective surface on the other side, should I need it). I plan on rapping the Insul Shield in fabric. However, I am not sure how exactly to mount the Insul Shield on to the MDF. Any ideas?

Thanks

Aaron

Anyone? Is a wood frame the best idea? Chicken wire, would that work. I am just not sure, but I was thinking of a wood frame made out of 2X4's.

If you're building BASS traps, you don't want MDF behind the absorbent - corner type traps need all the air space behind them you can spare, because the further from the wall the deeper in frequency they work. Also, absorbents (such as rockwool and rigid fiberglass) which are placed against a wall are limited in how low frequencies they will absorb. For direct 90 degree incidence, optimum absorption happens at 1/4 wavelength away from a boundary (such as a wall, or a piece of MDF) - so, the further you place absorbent from a wall or board, the deeper your bass trap will work... Ok, I need to give you further clarification. I am using the Insul Shield plus MDF as temporary walls in the live room. John Sayers gave me the idea to help tone down reflections and create non-parallel walls. However, I am not quite sure how to mount them together.

As far as the corner bass traps, I just plan on wrapping some of the Insul Shield in fabric and then laying it up against the wall. May not be ideal, but I think it will work for now.

Thanks for the advice so far, but any ideas on mounting the MDF and the insul shield together?

Hinges are one way. You'll have to use through-bolts and washers on the backside though because MDF won't hold a screw as well as plywood.

For mounting, after you wrap the fiberglass panels with fabric, use Velcro to fasten them to the MDF.

You can get 2" x48" of Velcro for about $8 at Home Depot.

I used the 2" and ripped it lengthwise to make 1" x 4" strips for mounting fabric frames to the front of my gobos.

Thanks for the help. When wrapping the fabric, did you just sew the fabric to itself on the backside or glue it to the fiberglass? Did you use any special glue for putting the velcro on the MDF?

I built cabinets and used 4" long pins glued to the inside and washers to hold the fiberglass in the cabs.

Then I built frames out of 1" x 2"'s, and stapled the fabric and the Velcro to the backside of the frames using .022" packing strapping as a batton.
