Hey folks, I'm a newcomer here and was looking for some direction on building an isolation booth. For background, I'm a full time student and wannabe singer who's looking to improve his voice. I like to record myself with my laptop and a cheap mic while I'm practicing because it helps me make sure I'm staying on pitch and my tone is all right.
Given this, I don't think (?) I need to have acoustic foam, eliminate external noise from my mic, or any other such stuff since really I'm the only person who will ever hear the recordings of my lovely scales?
My primary motivation for wanting to build this is to reduce the sound that escapes so I don't piss off my neighbors and housemates during late evening when I have the most free time to practice. Nobody is above or below me, I live in a one-story house. There's some space between my housemates, but I can still pick up on most loud conversations.
I thought a booth might be the best option since I'd rather not make any difficult to undo changes to my walls or flooring. For ventilation, I figure I could always just open the door every 10 or so minutes to make sure I don't suffocate to death. If I could make the booth semi-portable where I can detach everything that would be a plus for when I move.
I'm hoping I don't have to spend over $1,000 (whisper rooms are way out of my budget), but I'm willing to spend a lot of time on this. I really want to have a convenient spot in my house that I can freely sing and record myself in. Driving my car to empty parking lots just isn't cutting it for me (it's a pain and my laptop battery sucks).
Is what I'm looking to do realistic? For someone like me with no construction or DIY'ing experience, are there any relevant books, sites, etc. you can recommend? As of now, I have no real idea how I'm going put any of this together or what materials I need since I've never done anything like this in my life.
cliff notes:
-I'm a newbie with no construction or DIY experience
-I want to build an iso booth, only use for vocals
-I care only about reducing sound that escapes to outside
-I'm hoping for under $1,000
-Please help me
