Hi,
I have a Delta 1010, and a 4 space rackmount computer case (ATX?).

Im looking to build a new DAW based on what will work best with my Delta 1010.

I have been searching past posts, and the net only to become discouraged. Ive read so many conflicting posts. I dont know who, or what is accurate.

Id like to hear from people who built their own PC DAW/w Delta 1010.

The only knowledge Ive seem to come away with is most agreeing that windows XP is the ideal OS to run.

Stability is most important, but I dont need many tracks(at most 16). High number of Plugins are not an issue either. I use outboard effects. Everything I do is keyboard/sampler based. I sequence with an Akai MPC2000XL, effects are done with an ASR-10, and Lexicon Reflex.

BTW, Im hoping to get away with only spending (via ebay) around $500 give or take.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

All the systems I've built for recording were Intel based with ASUS mobo's.

Look into the ASUS P4P800 with around 2.4-2.6gig Intel CPU and 512-1gig PC2700 or 3200 Ram. (Crucial, Micron, Kingston)

I never used a 1010 but I did have a 44 and an Audiophile 2496, both worked quite well with thiese sytems and XP Pro, Logic Audio Platinum.

Voxpopuli, which multitrack program do you want to use?

spin

Thanks for your response guys!

"Voxpopuli, which multitrack program do you want to use?

Spin,
I have the Logic Audio package(basic) that came with the 1010, but Id like to get away from Logic since its now only upgrading for Mac system users

I dont have experience with any other multitrack programs, but Im open to what ever will work best for my needs.

Thanks again

Anyone familiar with an Asus P4T-E mobo, and P4 Northwood 2.0GHz Processor combinatio

Anyone familiar with an Asus P4T-E mobo, and P4 Northwood 2.0GHz Processor combination?

This is what Im looking into as of now..

Asus P4T-E mobo
P4 Northwood 2.0GHz processor
Windows XP

No idea as of now, any suggestions?
HDD x2?
512 memory?
CD-ROM?
CD-RW?
Multitrack program?

Thanks

Not to turn you in the opposite direction... but definately don't rule out using a Barton core Athlon processor sitting on an Asus A7N8X deluxe! Maybe a half a gig of RAM. One of my systems is a rackmount Barton 2500 running XPLite and I've never had any stability problems.... And it's much cheaper than other solutions.

good luck

i use a system just like that bus with an abit motherboard.. my xp2500 is clocked to xp3200 and its much faster than my sisters 2.6gig P4 that costed me a hell of a lot more to build.

every daw system i build these days i used a barton athlon with a abit or asus motherboard with a nvidia chipset..

using the mpc and the asr, trust your gonna wanna run more than 16 tracks.. you may end up with beats that have more than that.. i do all the time..
triton studio,mpc2000xl,motif rack... i tend to use 8-24 tracks for the beat.. then depending on the song... how ever many tracks i need.. r&b vox be crazy sometimes.. sometimes 24-32 tracks for vox..

No idea as of now, any suggestions?
>HDD x2?
Yes, I'd do two hard drives.
the minimum I'd do is 40/60- 40 for the OS and Apps, and the 60 dedicated to the audio project data.

>512 memory?
That's where I'd start and that should do you good- just work that 'til you get issues then upgrade later to 1GB, by that time the RAM will be even cheaper- it'll work well.

>CD-ROM? CD-RW?
Personally I'd skip both of these and get a DVD-R/W | DVD+R/W drive- it reads CDs, it reads DVDs, it burns CDs and it burns DVDs. And we know how big projects can get- and I hate spanning data over CD after CD and it's a lot nicer to keep it all on a nice 4.7GB DVD Disc.

A Nice cheap DVD Burner that has been getting alot of good word for it's lack of noise compared to other drives and a pretty solid drive all around is the: LG Super Multi DVD Writer (GSA-4040B) It's not the best, but it's like I said getting lots of good mention and you can pick one up for around $100-$135 Brand New!

>Multitrack program?
This is something you'll have to research yourself

Amen to that brother! That's my favorite setup. :D

I've been running this for over a year with no problems at all...

2x Delta 1010's on a Gigabyte GA7VE+ half gig of Kingston PC2100, 2x IBM DESKSTAR 30 Gig 7200 ATA133 drives and an Athlon 1800XP chip

I use both cool edit pro and cubase vst 32 v5.1
I've sucked 14 tracks in at the same time with cool edit with no problems.

After recording everything in I mixdown in Cubase (never liked cubase for recording) I've played back 32+ tracks laden with effects plugins and never hit over 60% on the cpu performance bar.

I'm running windoze98 SE. I tried XP pro but couldn't get my Deltas to sync properly with that so went back to 98SE.

Works like a dream. The athlons run hotter than the intel chips so invest in a good quiet fan and still save yourself a fortune.

Happy trackin,

Alec.

Thanks for all the feedback!!

I decided to stick with the ASUS P4T-E Mobo, and P4 2.0GHz Northwood processor. I picked these up brand new for just under $200. This combination is also highly recommended by M-Audio.

I now plan on looking for two sticks of 512MB PC1066 RDRAM.

Nosferous, Thanks for the info about the LG Super Multi DVD Writer (GSA-4040B) looks like the way to go.
Im also looking into an ASUS CDRW 52x24x52 it only like $35 new.

As for Windows XP, does it matter what version I get?

Also, anyone use Seagate Barracuda 40g, and 80g 7200rpm?

Anyone have some brands, and model #'s of HDD I should look into?

Well looks like Im gonna spend over $500...ehh, why not:D

Ok, and does anyone have a recommendation for a 2 unit rack mount case/power supply? I have a 4 space rack mount, but I think I'll keep that for my everyday personal computer.

Again thanks for all the feedback!!!

Okay,
So Ive been reading alot about Windows XP. The Pro Version seems to be the way to go due to future growth/updates.

I found this ATX rack chassis in another post. Seems like it might be a great choice if I were to go with the LG Super Multi DVD Writer (GSA-4040B). Wish I knew the price of this chassis...

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Man...I think I might be geting to deep!
Thinkin...
Mackie Control Universal/Cubase SX ouch!!!

thats not a bad price for the dvd-rw, but i just got my dvd-rw in a external case thats firewire and usb2... only paid 160.. and i have a 4x pioneer dvd+/- Rw.

i can get this deal for anyone else if you'd like.. my dad owns a computer company so i get things a little cheaper.

as for the OS, i've always stuck with xppro... never tried xp home after is crashed with in 20minutes on a system that wasn't even a DAW.

as for harddrives.. if the MB uses Sata150.. by all means get a sata drive.. they're fast as sh!t. other than that, i'd stick with western digital over segate.. get yourself awestern digital drive with 8mb cache...
