Hey guys this is my first cover recording. Not sure why I did it except I think the original is beautiful and the subject is "in the air" these days.

I started off basically with the intent of emulating it completely. Then I just decided that was a ridiculous thing to do, or try. But I did incorporate most of Knopfler's licks as best as I could in an evening, including the fingerpicking, which I don't do nearly often enough . His phrases are simple in notation, but complex in delivery, and I don't think I could capture his playing in a night.

Dire Straits version was recorded in 1985, which dawned on me to day was 18 years ago. Man time flies when you're playing your guitar!

Anyway, it's heavily loaded with flaws, but hopefully there are enough good moments to justify the effort. IOW, it's for listening "pleasure" mostly. But if something bugs ya feel free to throw it my way!

pretty sweet.. never heard the original but your version is great.. it sounds very real..

the guitar solo @4:08 may have been a hair too loud or something.. maybe because I wasn't expecting it.. great listen/performance/recording..

GREAT F**KING COVER.!!! It was actually quite true to the original. I listened to the original right afterwards and I was quite impressed with the acoustic guitars and percussion you had when compared to the original gazillion dollar recording. The only thing I would suggest is I would have liked to hear the Guitar a little fuller....it seemed sort of too hollow/distant. The guitar in that song should almost be like a second vocal track...IMO.

I thought the boost of the guitar solo at 4:08 was dead on..but then again I WAS expecting it.

lemme know what you used for your accordian sound.
 
I haven't heard the original but I'll have to go dig thru my records and check it out 'cause I like this.

As for your version........it has the same quality and attention to detail I've come to expect from your stuff.
Nice guitar work and excellent vocals. I thought the mix was pretty good too. I really like your guitar sound on this one....what's the chain on that lead guitar?

I like the idea of not trying to duplicate the original down to the last note. I prefer this approach where you play your interpretation of the song. That way, instead of feeling sterile, it has some fire to it. Nice work. :)

The acoustic guitar is something I added to give it my own touch. I was going to record the lead guitar in stereo but I thought I could get it right with one MC012 over the amp. Shoulda used two, or one and a sm57. I totally agree it should be fuller, but the error was in the recording, not the mix. O well :)

The accordian sound is a patch on the Korg called "Musette." It was as close to accordian as I could find in my rush to start tracking.


Steve, the lead giuitar chain is Paul Reed Smith>Marshall JCM900 head>Fender cab>Octava MC012 mic>Sutdio Projects VTB-1 pre>Delta sound card.

ah...you discovered the "secret"

very emotional version you did there man. Your synth stuff was really nice. I don't own the original version, but seemed like you did a good take on it. I think you had the gtr sound going in the room, but like you said, could have tracked it better. It sounds a little "back" from everything else, but a great tone, none the less.

your an amazing musician. I'm glad I get to hear your stuff.
 
kick ass. this is one of my fave tunes by them. mark knopfler is so under rated. and you managed to do him justice? damn!

I didn't care for the lead guitar tone. it seemed a bit hollow and "seperate". Almost a Santana doing Dire Straights sound. Humbuckers through Marshall doesn't quite have that bell type ring you get with a strat and a fender amp. But that's me being picky. The playing was killer.

me too... and sometimes, peoples stuff "buffers", instead of streams at nowhere too.. and like Pete says...sometimes ya gotta d/l it and either "open file" or "save to disk"..or sumpin like dos choices...

and yeah..the vocals were really good. I forgot to say that. Even for a cover, this song ooozed more "feelin' " than just about all the other tunes I have ever heard in the clinic.

it's those "simple" notes...eh?;)

Nice choice of a cover.You did a good job and pretty true to the original.Your vocal fits knoplers stuff well.Dire Straits is one of my favorite bands.I wore out their "Making Movies" album back in the 80's.

Excellent version!! Your voc's maintain the feel of the original while the gits provide quality backing! I THOUGHT there were some timing issues in the beginning bet ween your vocs and the tempo of the music but after a 2nd play, I realized it was just the vodka I've been consuming!

Overall this was a smooth production!

I'm really happy you guys liked this...I haven't learned a cover in about 15 years, which is probably pretty stupid in retrospect...

Just for the hell of it, I "cloned" the lead guitar track, panned them 50%L and 50%R, and tweaked their sounds so that they were slightly different for a better "stereo image." I'm too lazy to set up for a re-take :) but I thought this might be an interesting experiment to see if it sounds any better.
I still need a Strat to complete my guitar line-up though! I miss my old one.


mixmkr- Thank you very much man. Ya I think it sounded better in my room, but it was the first time I recorded the amp strictly with a condensor, and just one at that. Usually I'll put a sm57 on the grill and an Octava overhead (for clean stereo leads). Gotta experiment thought right? Glad you dug the vocals too...I wasn't sure how I was going to approach that. Decided to go for natural, which is usually the best choice. Thanks again.

Ya Santana plays a PRS too I think. Couldn't agree more about the Strat! I also agree that Knopfler is under-rated. Thanks for the comments man!

muzeman- didn't recognize the singing! Cool....I try to customize my voice to the instruments I'm using and feel of the song. It's always a new challenge for me when I lay down the vocal track of a song. I always think I know what it's going to sound like, and then I invariably prove myself wrong. :) In answer to your question, it's a keyboard patch. Thanks Pete!

Kramer- I've had this song in my head for a couple weeks and I was hoping this would help me deal with the stress of all the war retoric. It has. The guitar always finds a way.

MISTERQCUE- When I started tracking, I had planned on experimenting with an acoustic guitar, and by the time I finished, I forgot about it! But I sensed that something was missing....it took me a day to figure it out and 20 minutes to lay it down. I could see how the free form of the intro vocals could mess with the intoxicated. ;) I've never really considered vodka a smooth production though :eek: Always rips my stomach apart.

I'm familiar with the original. You delivered the song with the emotion it should be done. I'm not too excited with that thing following the 1st verse there. Some of the guitars sound slightly out of tune, but I may be imagination. There's an audible editing thingy at about 2:00. I may pay too much attention to these things, since the song is great. I would have liked the cool guitar solos louder. At least when there's no vocals present. I know there's tons of guitar fills here and there. I guess it's the Knopfler way or something, and I dig it how you managed to reproduce them. This is a REALLY good cover.
 
This has always been my favorite Dire Staits song. The delivery that Mark gave it and the guitar were really haunting. I must say that you have done a fantastic job with this. I have always wanted to cover it but just did think I could tackle it. If I had never heard this song before I would still think that this is fantastic, but since I already love the song I say that you have done it justice. Dont listen to what anybody tells you, you have dupicated the tone of the original pretty close. Thanks for taking this one on because it is great!!!

I'd like to see a picture of your studio.. that stuff is pretty interesting.. nothing on my walls except sheet rock and dirty fingerprints.. maybe a layer or two of smoke, judging by the yellowed paint..
 
Great choice for a cover dude!!!!!!IMO this was their best album,many great songs on it.Much justice done and much props to give.No complaints here.I actaully downloaded it befor anyone replied but it was taking so long I went to bed and forgot I did it.That sh*t keeps happening to me.Very true to the original,nice job.Mellow SLuice has entered the building...and yea sign of the times.Great guitar work as usual.Bang up job!
