Hey there,

I posted two tracks last week, now I did some work on the other tracks of the new EP of Plastic Halo, my Dutch band (www.plastic-halo.nl).

I know it´s a lot to listen, but maybe if you´ve got some spare time please please take a listen to one or two songs and give me some comments and critiques.

Thanks a lot for all the responses regarding the vocals, we tried to redo it but trust me, it won´t get any better than this :( some people actually shared the thought of his voice being just particular and not really bad, so I hope it will be fine like this.

The songs are:
Away From Here: I don´t know about this mix/master. Slow bluesy lovesong.
Moment In The Sun: Happy organ-driven popsong. I like the mix myself.
Take You Home: Rock n roll!!
We Can Be: New master, long epic emotional rockballad with a big climax.
Out Of My Way: Inspired by the 80´s, the only triggers used on the album.
Cannonball: Our local hit, pure rock, I´m most proud of this mix.

Thanks a lot for the effort!

P.S.: The ´bonus´ songs are just for fun, very probably not to be included on the cd.

I think the problem I'm having, is your music really needs a killin' singer... I think he could do the job if he got some lessons or listened to rufus wainwright a lot... (making the nasal work for you :) ) but I won't revisit what has already been covered elsewhere...

away from here: love the song, love the break to the bluesish guitar, the guitar sounded a little out of tune there, which distracted from the beauty of what that moment could've been. Also, the rhythm guitar that's going on panned to the right, get's a little grating at that placement, it attracts my ear to that space in the "room" and doesn't change when the tune comes up or down, maybe if you moved it or swapped it for the heavier guitar when it got up, add a little variety to it's placement, or center it a bit, and bring it a little down in the mix? I like the song.

Moment in the sun: sounds kinda like an old fastball song, it's not really striking me that much, but I think the organ sits really well in the mix, and is overall well done... the singer is doing some out of tune stuff, which doesn't help his case (second verse? around 4:00)

We can be: Not the biggest fan of the openning keys patch, a little too "you're listening to the sounds of the moonlight lounge" for me, I think a more realistic rhodes patch, or whirly would do a wonder to that, or go in the toy piano direction, get kind of an eels sound out of it...

Okay, I know I haven't touched on everything, but it's a start. I do think you can do things with effects and mixing to make the singer not suck, but he HAS to sing in tune, that's his end of the bargain, you can fix the rest in the mix ;)

Cheers.

I listened to 'Away from here', (that's all I had time to). Not really qualified to comment on the mix, but I think the song has potential. It has an interesting vibe. Your singer as a unique voice, which can be the key to getting noticed. BUT, I think he needs to strengthen it some and get a little more vocal control in order for your that song to be as good as it could have been. I think the style of that song sounds like something that could be successful in the "indie" type music scene, with that one caveat mentioned above. I don't think you need a new singer, he really does sound unique - he just needs to learn to use and control what he has to it's full potential, and then your band can reach IT's full potential.
