Has anyone ever heard of a fender start being made in the UK?

I remember when I first started playing the bass when I was 17ish a friend I knew briefly told me that his dad owned a very rare British made fender strat. I played on it so I know the guitar itself existed but I was new to playing then and I didn't look for any manufacturing details. There was no reason why he would have lied and I think his dad backed him up on it. I think it was from the 60s as this was when there was an inport restriction wich meant no one could buy a US strat in the UK. From what I remember there were very few made (three or four maybe). Does anyone have any info on this, or is it a load of bollocks!!

Help me out coz It's a cool thing to have played on if it is true.

Cheers

I never heard of Fender doing any manufacturing in Britain.

To say only 3 or 4 were ever made doesn't really make any sense because if Fender had made guitars in britain at any time it would have meant opening a manufacturing facility here and even if it was very short lived I reckon they would've got more than 3 or 4 instruments out the door. ;)

So I'm not saying it definitely isn't the case but it's not anything I've ever heard about.

In fact I'd put quite a bit of money on it being BS. :D

The Fender web site's product-dating resource makes no reference to any UK-manufactured anything. FWIW.
