Bricks!

The mason's finished up today. Looks pretty good I guess. They acid washed the bricks and spilt some on the threshold to the front door. :(

Guess I'll have to spray paint that.

The siding guys are comming tommorrow to finish up the outside. With a little luck, I'll be painting this weekend, and the outside will be "buttoned up"!

The front will have 2 big "lanterns" on each side of the door, and an awning above it.

Regarding the dump pile, I'd leave it, then once the construction is completely done, rent a dumpster and fill it up, and have someone cart it away.

Of course that depends if dumping is free or not. Around here, they charge access to the dump, as well as pricing based on what you bring.

A $600 three-day rental for a roll-off dumpster is less costly in the long run.

Of course, you have a dump pile on your property for a while :(
 
It's 10 bucks for a pick-up load at the dump here.
I've already carted off 5 loads. I'll haul it off. I just can't stand to have that stuff piled up in my "park-like" backyard. ;)

Gotcha loud and clear. For 10 bucks, I'd haul it off too without any hesitation whatsoever.

Wow!! The brick and the wooden door really make a distinctive impression (a classy joint resides herein).

Looking forward to sharing your progress with further ooohs and aaahs as things progress.

So why didn't those monkeys clean up their mess? They had enough truck space to get the junk over there right?

Or was that part of the deal? Don't let them tell you what they usually do, hold some of their money till it's clean.

Why are you suprised Jake? LOL

Off our kitchen we have a 1/2 bath. Actually, its a 1/4 bath, its 4' deep and 37" wide. Yes, its a VERY tiny bathroom.

Anyway, we had it professionally remodeled, and the junkpile in the backyard when the monkey was done was larger than the cubic volume of the bathroom it came out of.

I still haven't figured that one out.

Because THIS monkey, forgot to specify that in the contract. :(

I did specify it on the foundation contractor. No way I was gonna haul off wrecked forms.
And I STILL had a mess from them. They didn't wreck the the forms for the cable channels. I had to do that, and they came out, begrudgingly, in little pieces.

The front looks like a massive brick wall right now, but the "lanterns" and awning will really break up the monotony of all that brick.

It's not done yet. ;)

Aww..that doesn't matter. It also didn't say they would be leaving the job a mess, that should go without specification. You just gotta learn to kick some subcontractor ass. I know five major general contractors in my area and not one of them would settle for that. You really should hold out on the last 10%. Be a ballbuster it pays. It may take a half a dozen calls. Drop names, act, lie, tell them you have a couple friends considering them for projects and you can't give a good reference in light of that mess, just get them back to finish the job. Point is the job is incomplete until the mess is gone.

Period.

I'm not talking out my ass either...

Yeah, thats a good point. If you look at the pic of the mess, on the other side of the sand pile, you can see the planks for the scaffolding. I'm sure he'll be comming for those tommorrow. I'll just make sure he cleans up the mess when he comes to get them and his final payment.
 
Right...like what, he just wants to take the valuable stuff and leave the garbage for you? That is not completion in anyone's book. "Final 10% to be payed upon completion"..if you included anything like that, it IS in the contract. Even if not you did somehow agree to pay the balance upon completion which includes cleanup as a matter of common sense. A judge will agree with you, I know because I've seen it happen more than once.

I love these progress pictures.. KEEP them coming.

I think you need to paint those doors fire engine red!!! lol!

The French doors look nice too. Don't rule out the Marshall stacks on the patio there too. Lots of natuaral ambience outside that I'm sure your neighbors would love to hear, late at night!

I have to agree with Jake. I used to do a lot of construction work when I was younger and being a no nothing kid it was my job to fill the truck with the scraps and garbage. No job I ever worked did we leave a big pile like that.

If you do end up doing it yourself one trick is to put an old tire up by the cab of the truck and have a rope or cable tied to the tire and extended to the back of the truck. Then you pile all the crap on top of the rope and tire. Tie the rope to something at the dump and drive off in the truck and it will pull all the crap out.
