I just went shopping with a friend who wants to buy an acoustic guitar with electronics. He was looking at Taylors and trying to spend under $2,000. After trying Taylors in the range of $1400 to $2200, we tried a Breedlove (SC25 maybe, I'm not certain). It had the same pickup/internal mic system that the better Taylors had. The Breedlove (priced at $2389) blew the Taylors away. Much fuller bottom. Bright yet round high end. The electronics, although they looked the same, seemed to work better too. No mic feedback issue.

Is this consistent with your experience? If my friend is to increase his price ceiling to $2400 (including the electronics), do you have other recommendations as well?

Hey Slim,

I've never played a Breedlove, but I have heard really good things about them.

A month or two ago I spent a couple hours in the acoustic room at the local Guitar Center, playing damn near every guitar in the place. Martin and Taylor both had some really nice guitars around that range (and more of course). However, the guitar that really blew me away, and sounded the best of all of them IMO was a Larivee that ran around $1900. There were other Larivees that were more (up to about $3500) or so, but that one seemed to me to stand out. I was surprised, always thinking of both Taylor and Martin as my two "One day I'll own a..." acoustic guitar manufacturers.

Just a thought, but if he can, have him check out the Larivee's too.

BTW, I didn't play any of them plugged in, but I know that particular Larivee did have electronics.

I've played a few Breedlove guitars. They are handmade as opposed to the factory built Taylors. And more like a guitar that is custom made and built by a person rather than by a company.
I love the Taylor guitars. They are laser-precision cut and all play very well. But I don't think they are in the category of Breedlove. I would put Breedlove with Collings, Bourgoise, maybe even Olsen. They are in those class of guitars which seem to have a soul. They speak when they are played. Don't make fun for me saying this. If you dont get it, then.....you just dont get it.

Personally, I would save the few extra bucks.

Thanks H2H. I know what you mean, and having played one, I agree.

Why so defensive?

The constant abuse from girlfriends because I treat my 10 guitars like children has made me become defensive of my feelings for them. They are always jealous because I love my guitars more than I do them. And they're right.

Breedlove guitars are great!

I do not own one, nor do I own stock in the factory.

Taylor and Martin are excellent guitars, but Breedlove, Collings and the so-called 'boutique' guitars are just better instruments.

If you're going to spend $2,000, you may as well spend the extra few hundred.

It's the difference between buying a top of the line Cadillac and a Ferrari.

Buy the best and you're never disappointed.

..., and BTW, you get a whole lot of guitar for cheaper if you buy used. Go to a reputable dealer - try these websites:
http://www.gruhn.com
http://www.mandoweb.com

They even do mail-order. It costs you the shipping to try any guitar you like - with no questions asked approval, you can get a mint top of the line guitar for less than it's new price.

Boutique acoustics

There are many nice acoustics out there today for under $3000.....we live in a great era for craftsmanship.Of course, there is a lot of shoddy work out there too,but the aforementioned brands in this thread bear witness to the fact that we have a real asortment to choose from, not like the days when there was really only Martin or nothing. One of the best low priced guitars that I have ever played is Seagull. The necks are between a 12 string and a 6 in width, and the tone gives alot of bang for the buck. They aren't in the same class as the others mentioned, but when you play a really good one,it's a treat.I have a handmade guitar by Doug Jackson, who is a luthier down here in FL.He really builds a quality instrument, and I wish more people knew about his stuff,\.
