So I just got a new pair of Mackie MR5's mk3 and I have was wondering if there is a correct way to break in new monitors. I have just been playing music through them at a moderate to low volume for the past few hours. So far they sound great and they seem to be breaking in pretty well. I guess my biggest concern is that I might not break them in properly and do some damage. Is there a right way to do it? Also i have been reading that playing pink noise through them for a day straight works great but that seems a little excessive to me.

Just use them and don't get all wrapped up in nonsense like breaking in speakers. Damage is caused by exceeding their limits, not by improper "break in". Changes in performance that occur after the speaker has been manufactured are negligible and will be complete within a minute or so of normal use.

yeah, pretty much that /\

but having said that, I played regular CD's thru mine. All I did was vary the volume every couple hours and I did this for a couple evenings after work.

All that changes is the compliance of the spider as the varnished fabric softens a little. It takes about a minute and you can't damage anything. If testing at the factory hasn't already done this then the first song you play reasonably loud will.

Hey congrats on your purchase. I actually have the Mackie MR5MK2 pair, and have been satisfied thus far. I found it necessary to boost the high frequency EQ in my situation, because these sound a bit dull in the high frequencies. This will largely depend on your monitoring environment and the improvements in the versions.

Cheers,
