This is still the hottest mix end I ever did...but it sounds right to me. Wondering if yoos guys will play it through your nearfields and tell me if it's over the top. Tends to sound a little mid-rangie trough my monitors....but the phones sound is great. Plays goodly in the car.

Plead to tax your ears once more...but it's a longer version with mo' stuff at the end.

I'm really sweating this one...one of the best I've done, arrangement-wise. I took my own persistent advice on it...texture; contrast; theme; counter theme; melody; tension; release; dynamics; surprise. It makes me move. I want to get it really right before I shelve it, and by ears are kinda mooked with a cold....relying a lot on instrument-flying....and savvy buds....

To me it sounds beautiful man. I'm listening to it on my KRK's and it sounds perfect to me. I love the lead guitar.

The only thing I didn't like was the wistling, but that's just me.

I'll have to catch it tonight... Good to see you back!

It is so nice and relaxing what I need to hear now.:)
the drums dont fit in so well to me though.

well imho its excellent...the mix sits just right and the guitar and layering are perfect..

Id shelve it...sounds like a jobs well done to me

I wish you had slightly better brass samples, if I was pushed to say something critical, but they still work

nice to hear you back jeff

Good to be back!

I lost all my stashed samples when my computer got the flu...a wipe of the HD by a techie was necessary. My bad...I shouldn't do internet on my recording computer.

So I'm back to using the old crashes and bangs. I should have a kit set up here in a few weeks.

shite...same thing happened to me...and im still doing the same lol

if you've got a kontakt player lemme know I think I have a few samples of brass stuff

Hotter bass? Oh yeah...I know what you mean!

I caught a Brazilian 25-piece samba band this summer. They were an earthquake!

A tiny bit more definition on the bass is all I can hear that's needed.
I felt the voices pushed it into an easy listening mode that contrasted aesthetically with the build & finish.
Oh, & whatever is doing the stooges noise in the background: woot woot a wooty wooty woot - I found distracting.

Thanks, Ray..

I was concerned that it was too regular and too loud....I think I should hold it in reserve for a very few places...and reduce the level a bit. That you picked it up is telling. Edit time. Almost there.

I've also enveloped the trumpet track, and worked in some swelling to make it more natural.

I avoided getting too busy with the horns...repeating a simple theme: do you think it'd be worthwhile to extend the theme and busy it more? Some dashing whole toney flash or something? Do you find the parts too repetitive?

I dont know the name of the instrument but the thing that sounds like two pieces of sandpaper being rubbed together is a little loud to me. The snare doesnt fit as well as I would want it too. There is something a little bright about the mix that I can't put my finger on. I like the the whistling, and the mumbling people, the thing I didnt like was the midi horns, sounded like "The Princess Bride" at some points. Great riff, great melody, great song. My girlfriend said "you should judge these songs by how quickly I tell you to turn them off." and she said turn this up. So from her, Well done!

Cool...the sandpaper thing is on the left where I have no HF hearing...so I appreciate the tipoff...I overlooked it...a lot going on.

I'd love to have real horns...or better samples!!!! But I'm OK with them....organic would be better...

Adding the swells and advancing the lines a coupleMS's gave them a little more 'pop' and realism...they sound better now..

When you say snare 'fit', d'ya mean too out front? Or something in the EQ?

It's a real snare...doing rim and trills and hits. Was it poorly tuned? I'm a guitar player...don't know diddly about tuning drums....

Meanwhile I pulled some mids off the bass....and I think it's better defined....and reduced the levels of the acoustic guitars in the big horn outtro....which clarified things. Subdued the ookaooka's It's beginning to rock. I recorded the lead vocal, too. Have all the finals up shortly.

Thanks to you girl. I applaud her taste! :^) [Was she dancin' a samba? Video? :^)

CHAIR BOOGIE!!! Everything is ON THE MONEY, except the drum track is shrill a bit, and is missing some low mids... Jesus, your bass work is awe inspiring. I hate you. :D Shaker down the left might be a tad big. Love me some backwards around the circle... :) Brass patch at 2:30 is a little disappointing; not the notes, but the "patchness" of it. Want to hire my horn section? :) This tune is RIPPIN!!! Shiznizzle, that was FUN!!!

The horn patches sound a little "behind" the mix - probably the built in reverb from the keyboard. The rest sounds good on my system... Great tune!

Ok...you mean the snare specifically? Like. Shave some off the 1000+ on that...about 3db?

The horn patches sound a little "behind" the mix -

The revised horns are a tad better...I advanced them a bit ahead of the beat to make 'em less 'lazy' and the swells make them a bit less 'lectronic-sounding.

And the fucci/shaker/sandpaper thing is tamed -3 or -4 db.

Jeez...I'm kicking myself over an obvious oversight, though: I shoulda modulated in the second cycle of the outtro...a half-step....one opportunity for 'afterburners-on' lost. D'OH!

I appreciate all the help....ear infection on top of damaged ears...and I really want to work, and not wait.

Gonna tweak now....getting very close. Thanks again!

Glad you like this one. I'm partial to an orgasmic Latin boogey. I guess I got close to one. And, LL, this is strictly a head tune....heard it complete...never really applied theory voodoo...which woulda ruined it, I reckon: much too simple...I would have doo-dadded it up into dreckworthiness.

Trusting the inner jukebox is as hard as learning to trust God....but the rewards of obedience to both are apparent over time!

On my monitors it seems a little bass lite. There's a great groove but the drumkit is unbalanced, I'd like to hear more kick, but maybe that's not what you're going for. It really grooves though, I like it a lot

I think , maybe , what I oughtta do is put this away for a few days until my ear clears up. :^) Go practice my guitar or something. It's my HF ear that's goobered up...so I hear a lotta bass....with the predictable result. Too hot, no bottom. Must be patient.

I really don't want to screw this one up a lot....
I do note that Ray said the bass lacked definition...and you get it light in the bottom. Both noted....I'll re-bix when I'b bedder [sniff].

And thanks to alla yoos for helping me get things sharper. As usual!

good work... just wondering did you lift the motif from monks round midnight or is that just happenstance???
