brand new EMU 0404 -- MIDI sounds aren't playing

I just bought and installed a new EMU 0404 which seems to be working, except for the fact that MIDI tracks (such as in the Cakewalk sample files) is not playing back in Home Studio 2002. A .mid file will, however, play fine in Windows Media Player.
I've done some searching in the forums and checked and re-checked the MIDI in and out drivers.... still can't figure it out...
any ideas?

the 0404 does not have a midi sound module, windows media player has a software one. You need to route your midi track to a VSTi/DXi
