My studio console has come back from the repair shop and my band is back in action recording again. This song along with 2 others is going to Roadrunner Records A&R rep. Just posting to see if any METAL HEADS like it. I am pretty satisfied with the mix, although i may cut 1 Db of gain from it. Only 1 because i want it to sound like all hell is breaking loose. Anyway any comments are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

This sounds great man, i'm loving the tight tight rhythm tracks and when it goes off into fills it's very cool.

Heavy is an understatement, i don't think it's possible to get song much heavier.

Take a look at that snare at :30. I'm thinking the snare could sound a bit more authorative like the other tracks do. Vox sound properly mixed and well tracked.

That segment at 2:26 is very cool with the high guitar fills.


Good luck with the RR thing I'm hopin you get somethin goin, keep me posted. Great stuff Shaun, definitely deserving a 5.

this reminds me of earlier Pantera. Somewhere around the Far Beyond driven era.
I would definantly back off the level a little bit. It sounds like its a little distorted on my speakers. Maybe thats what you were going for? The drums were a little dry for my taste as well. Just a little reverb would go a long way on this i think.
Good to see you back in action man.What instrument do you play in this band? I got a new song posted as well, check it out if you get a chance.
 
Why the long moment of silence at the end? Song sounded cool, I think it's cool how you can really hear the words clearly for being this style.
 
Hm, one thing I noticed immediately was that your voice sounds like the guy from Soilwork, good job :). Cool song.

Wirenck-Thanks for the listen. As a rule i generally like to keep my drum tracks on the dryer side, but maybe a tad on the entire kit. I was definately trying to push the envelope for heavy. But i am going to cut 1 db. As for the Pantera comparison(we get that all of the time) I love it, Far Beyond Driven is my favorite album from them so that is really cool.

Devil-Thanks for listening. I will have to tell my vocalist TJ that you can understand what he is saying. He has been working really hard at sounding uber aggressive but still retain clarity. I will address the moment of silence. I didn't realize it was there.

Fatt- Thanks for listening. That is really cool that you think the vox sound like Speed Strid. I love Soilwork. That is a major compliment, but i don't do vocals. Well i do backing vox, and play guitar. My bud TJ Janik does vocals.

Bloodshark-Thanks dude. I am really into this kinda stuff. Melodic stuff. Everything. But there is nothing like playing a show and watching the entire crowd mosh like rabid dogs. I had two versions of this tune. This i think is heavy as fuck, but the original was played in Drop B, this is Drop D. Man the other was so much heavier, but lacked definition, so we went with the higher tuning. Thanks again. Metal is alive and well!

Really, really good!!!

Vocals sound great! A little level heavy, but it works because it's so upfront and in-your-face. Nice doubling stuff you have in there.

Guitars sound excellent. Not much to comment about there!

Drums: Personally I'd bring up the kick and snare, and add a lot more bottom end on both. Just a suggestion though, because I'd hate to muddy up what the guitars are doing with heavy drum EQ. I agree with your choice to go dry on the FX. Gives it more punch through the whole mix.

Hey Sonixx, Thanks for the listen. Glad you can understand it. TJ(vox) will be pleased too because when you are doing vocals this heavy it is hard to really sound coherent, and ennunciate. The next tune i post you may not be as lucky with...it is really fast.

Showdown, Thanks for listening. I was curious about the vox being too loud. I may bring em back just a touch. I really am into the punchy mixes so i don't do much with drums (effects/verb-wise) I may bring up the kick and snare just a touch as well.

Magnetic8080, Thanks for the listen. The guitar is a Schecter C-1 diamond series run through a Line 6 Flextone full stack. Mic'd with kinda cheap Nady Mic, plugged into a studio monster cable, run straight into my Roland VS2480CD. I always have luck with the lower end Nady's. I really can't explain it. That was ran into the board. It is double tracked. Vocals are TJ going straight from another nady mic into the board, no EQ, Effects...just a little compression. He sounds better un effected. Bass was run direct through the Bass pod(original one) and drums were two overheads(XY), two snare mics(one on top the other underneath flipped outta phase) again noeffects or reverb here. And the bass drumms and toms were triggered from my alesis module. I mix triggered sounds with real ones to give punch and clarity, but still have a real sound. Our drummer hates triggers but i make him use them. This time i let him off on the snare trigger cause he does a roll or two and they sound un-natural triggered. So he won, no snare trigger. All this was run through a multiband compressor and mastered by me. That's it!
 
Very good mix. I agree that bringin any more punch on the kick may cloud the low end of the guitars. I`m not really a Metal head, but I can appreciate the intensity and structure.

Hey Toki, thanks for the listen. I kinda think that it is probably as heavy as i can get it. I always like to come back to a real groove no matter how heavy it is so you can still move to it.

Wireneck, The roland is my board. I use the pre right in it. They have come a long way from the VS880 days. There is a pic In the studio forum. Under Pics of my studio. I posted some more pics there that don't look like you are staring through a keyhole. HAHAH!

The only thing I can say about this mix is the kick drum sounds a bit weak. Other than that I love the guitar tone and the growling vocals. FUCKING METAL \m/;)\m/. Maybe a little boost in the 200 and 5K (Q1.4) regions on the bass drum track. The 5K boost would also bring out the attack on the snare. Other than that....BITCHIN!!!

Hopefully you don't have enough snare in your kick track for the snare sound to be affected by an eq cut/boost on the kick?
You trigger anyways? so i guess it doesn't matter. That comment was just sort of funny, maybe VESUVIUSJAY is just confused.

So hypathetically speaking how would you bring the kick out more? Compression? I am still wet behind the ears with mixing EQ so conflicts of interest such as that I would still evade me. The hurdles of self tuition I suppose. But say you wanted to bring the kick out a wee bit in a similar situation. What track properties would first come to mind for adjustment, since the EQ solution is an obvious conflict of interest? Thanks for your infinite wisdom in advance! \m/HORNS UP BRO\m/
 
reminds me of a hardcore band from ohio called cutthroat.
vox were a tad loud to my ear but i was listening in lo fi mode.
good job!
