I really like my new br1600cd. I'm still struggling a bit with drums and with creating patterns. The more time I spend with it the more I understand. I was wondering how to solve guitar pickup noise (strat, tele, single coil) when in close proximity to the recorder. I also wasn't able to get my auto fade to auto fade.

Not sure about the noise problem, but the gain knobs are VERY sensitive between 9-10 (high gain setting). If you back them back to about 3:00 o'clock, you can eliminate some of the buzz. Regarding the auto fade....first, the effect has to be turned ON in Master mode. Up in the upper right side of the main box in the screen, you'll see something like FX on/off. That needs to be set to on. Sometimes mine has been OFF when entering that screen, then I finally realize it and toggle it on.

I record with a Strat and I sit a few feet away from the recorder, I use footswitch to stop/start.

For drum patterns, I first select a pattern, the drum patterens are divided into six parts: intro, v(erse)1, f(ill)1, v(erse)2, f(ill)2 and end. I chose one of the verses, set the tempo, select kit and record the entire song. Write down the drum pattern number, you'll need it. After recording the song and noting the lenght, for example say it's 137 measures, you press the Rhytum Edit, select Drums.

You should see in the info window the drum pattern number, again for example say P154-V1, and next to it a place were you set how many measures you want it to play. Using the example of 137 measures, you dial in 137. You should be at the intro of the song, press play to listen and hear if you have the right drum patteren. Press Zero, return the song to start and press Insert (F1), here you would 'insert' a Intro, for example P153-Intro, for one measure. You'll notice that the drum pattern number goes back to P001, you have to dial in the intro, this why I say to right down what pattern you use. Press play and you should hear the intro (P153) and after one measure, it should switch back to the main verse (P154), used for the example and the verse measures should decease by one measure to 136. Return to Zero, press play and play until you want to insert a fill, say at the chorus, measure sixteen, stop the recorder, press insert, the pattern will go back to P001, dial in (P155-Fill1) for one measure. Press the Fast Forward (FF) and your song should advance one measure back to the main verse pattern. Here I rewind back a few bars and press play to hear if my inserts are correct. I do this for the entire song, it takes me longer to program the drums than it does to record. Email me if you have any questions.

Thanks for reply. I started using the noise gate on the br1600cd and set it at 90. I haven't noticed any tonal degradation and it cut most of the hum I was getting while waiting to record my Strat. Thanks for input on auto-fade. It turns out some knuckle head (one guess) was inputting the time(in the hour slot istead of minutes) incorrectly. It worked great with the right info input. Thanks.

Thanks 72fender, that's kinda how I worked my first bass/drum for first song. I was wondering if there is a way to assemble a first verse or chorus and then copy them to the next section of your song, say for 2nd/3rd verse and repeated chorus. Then go back and maybe change a few accents and such to break up potential monontony.I need to try a footswitch for start/stop also. Thanks,

Using Drums

Can you play/record drums using the track select buttons, for example as you would in rehersal mode, while the song is playing back. In other words, can you just play/record drums manually on the drum track while the songs tracks are being played back. It appears you have to create/save or use an existing pattern, and then keep fitting it into the song. Is this correct?

Thanks

I'll chime in here, too. Thanks, 72Fender, this was helpful to me as well. I was dialing up the pattern and gradually building the drum parts as the song played back, rather than first setting it to play the basic verse drum rhythm and then going back and adding fills. I think I was afraid by adding a fill for one measure it would extend the basic verse by that much and get all out of whack. Your method sounds somewhat easier.

I haven't used copy & paste but try it and tell us how it works. I haven't tried creating a drum pattern either. When we start recording the band will be there, so we'll have 'live drums'. I record my original songs first, with programmed drums, and than give the band my songs on CD for them to listen to, But I wanted to learn to program them.

Cutting and pasting is a snap. I wanted to lay down a groove to solo over. I recorded a few measures, picked the one that sounded the best, and then copied and pasted it. The recorder gives you the option to paste it "X" amount of times. I immediately had ten minutes of time to noodle over the progression.

I've since used the feature with demo background vocals, drums, and for several odd sound effects I felt I couldn't recreate on the guitar.

I, however, haven't done anything too precise with it yet.

Blooby, you can also try the loop phrase with that several measure pattern. It will take a little longer to create than the copy paste, but you get the advantage of being able to adjust the tempo etc if it is not correct in the first place or you just want to change it later. For what YOU were doing, sounds like copy/paste was probably the quickest way to accomplish it.

Simulated Bass Sounds

Has anyone messed around with the simulated bass sounds on the br1600cd to the point where they sound acceptable? If so any simulated bass tips for my basic pop/rock projects would be appreciated. Thanks,
Carlglo

I experimented with them a little at first. I couldn't get them to sound decent at all. Bought a Roland SC-55 sound module off ebay, and THAT sucks too. Bought a BOSS DR670 drum machine that has decent bass sounds that I ended up using. Don't need the drum machine for drums, but I keep it for the bass sounds. Anyone know of a good sound module for BASS.

There are a lot of good bass sounds on some of the "keyboard" modules.
