Does anyone know how to add the occasional crash cymbal to a song. Does it have to be a loop phrase?

You can phisically add it in yourself using a bounce recording.
bounce your drum tracks to another set of stereo tracks. while its recording, you can add the crash in when you want it by pushing the crash button/track button.
you may need to look at the owners manual so you know how to get the crash to sound instead of the button acting as the track button, but its an idea that would work for you instead of having to create a one measure drum patch that has the crash in it it and then having to insert it.
