So over the last several days I made two covers. I did Metallica's Leper Messiah and Megadeth's This Was My Life.

Ok, here's my kweshteeon to anyone goodly enough to listen and comment, which mix do you like better and why? Both were made pretty much the same, same guitar tones, same drum samples... I just mixed and mastered (if you wanna call my amatuerish eq'ing 'mastering') differently.

Leper Messiah....guitars seem a bit bright to me....need more dirt or something. Bass is a bit too punchy. It could boom more. Song seems to have a bit too much high-end on it. Not a bad recording, just a bit high-happy for this tune.

My Life...sounds a bit closer to the original...I think a part of that is the vox. You sound closer to Dave than James. The guitars sound more like the original here.....Megadeth has a higher tone. Bass could still use a bit more, to cover some of the bottom a bit more.

All in all, I'd say cool tunes. I personally like the Metallica one better, just because I like the song better. I think as far as your performance, it is equal. You did a good job on both of them. I recognize where they came from, but I also hear your own interpretation of them. That's what I like in a cover. Originality from the performer. You captured that.

Nice job man.

Thanks. I agree with what ya said about the leper cover's guitars. I was experimenting with just how far back I could roll the gain and still have a heavy sound. I think I found the limit. I went in to add some more dirt but I had layered so many guitars that it started to muddy up the extra added harmony bits, so I left it like it is.

i think you did a better job on the megadeth tune. the guitar harmonies are too loud in leper messiah and there's alot of hum which sounds like it's coming from the guitars. metallica were all about some thick ass guitars. i agree that the guitar tone is pretty decent match for the megadeth tune. to me, the guitars have plenty of gain in both tunes. vocals on leper messiah sound kind of southern rockish.

i bet it took a good chunk of time to do this. i was a big metallica fan as a kid so you get my thumbs up for having the balls to even try this. i used to know damn near every note of every metallica song (pre candy ass metallica) and it sounds like you're playing the guitar parts note for note.

It's hard for me to admit, but old-school Metallica fan here too. I like the Metallica cover. It's different in tone, etc, but I think that's what makes it fun. It's your interpretation.

Cool song, man.

Actually, the whole problem with Leper is the kick and snare are too quiet. The overheads are really, really loud. The kick needs to be much more clicky and hard sounding. The snare needs more low end. The toms sound great.

The guitars could be thicker, but that is a matter of taste. If you make the drums sound stronger and more in your face, the guitars won't sound as thin.
