Hey there. I've got my music recorded on tracks 1, 2, and 3. How would I bounce them to track 4? I'm using a Tascam M208 mixer. I already panned and
adjusted the volume from the mixer the way I like it, for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd track. Together they sound beautiful. Your help is appreciated!

This is my plan:

[track1 Rhythm guitar , drums]
[track2 Lead guitar]
[track3 Lead guitar solo]

Bounce to track 4, then I'll record:

Track 1 Organ, bass
Track 2 Vocals
Track 3 Backup Vocals , tambourine

  1. Latch the TAPE buttons up by the TRIM knobs on the mixer channels connected to tape tracks 1~3 (is that mixer channels 1~3?)
  2. Latch the 2-4 assign switch on those same mixer channels
  3. PAN those mixer channels hard R
  4. Raise the faders of those mixer channels to create the desired mix of tape tracks 1~3
  5. Raise the GROUP 4 fader
  6. Record enable track 4 on the tape machine
  7. Put the transport into REC-PLAY mode
  8. You are now recording the sum of tape tracks 1~3 onto track 4
  9. Do a little "hey check me out I'm bouncing tape tracks" dance and crack open a cold one.

1 the 'tape in' tracks are on channels 5,6,7,8.
2. The 2-4 assign switch? there is only 1-2 button and 3-4 button.

I think I have the idea though. I have track 1, 2, 3, 4 connected to the 'TAPE IN" on channels 5,6,7, and 8. I would enable the 'tape' button by the trim knobs on channels 5,6,7, then enable channel 5, 6, and 7's [3-4] button and pan them a hard Right. Is this correct?

Yes-yes-yes.

My bad on the 2-4 thingy...I meant 3-4.

And yes you've got it...TAPE switch by TRIM knob down on channels 5~7, 3-4 assign switches down and PAN knobs hard R on 5~7, set your levels/mix and raise the groups 4 fader and track 4 on the tape deck should be getting level. Time to record!

Thanks a lot! I'm gonna get straight to recording tomorrow! After a nice breakfast! Any problems I have I'll make sure and post it, thanks for your help my friend.

Do I have to enable the recorder's SYNC switch on tracks 1-3 in order to bounce?

No.

IIRC the 3340 models had better playback specs on the reproduce head so no...playback with the sync function disabled. This will playback tracks 1~3 from the reproduce head (the one closest to the capstan) which will give you the best quality.

In essence you are mixing down tracks 1~3 to a mono mix and recording that mix onto track 4, so you use the reproduce head to reproduce tracks when mixing down, and the sync head (the middle one...also the record head) to reproduce tracks when overdubbing so that your new tracks stay in sync time-wise with the previously recorded tracks. You aren't doing any overdubbing at this stage. Once you've got your bounce on track 4 you will set track 4's sync function to "on" or whatever the label is so that the new tracks you will record onto tracks 1~3 will line up with your mix on track 4, and then when it comes time to mix all 4 down to your stereo mix you will leave the sync function off on all 4 tracks.

Does that help?

Ok, I got it bounced ;)

Thanks for your help!

BTW, can I use a phantom power supply on my mixer?
Its an AKG N-66e

Congrats!

Yes you can use that phantom power supply, or any external phantom supply for that matter. That is the whole idea of the external supply so you can us phantom-powered mics with a mixer that lacks phantom power.

Phantom-powered mic --> AKG N-66e --> M-208 MIC IN

Well Cory you did it again. Good advice. AllenM Welcome to this forum. You have picked the best people on the net to talk to and learn from. When you have some tracks done we would love to hear them in the Post Your Analog Recordings Here thread. It's all about the sound.

I'll be sure to post it! So far it sounds great. Tomorrow I'll record the Bass/organ on one track. Then when my phantom power supply comes in I'll finish up the remaining 2 tracks with vocals, backup vocals, and the tambourine.
