Bought an SM7 now what

Hi all

Well I got called in for work on New Years day and got a 12 hour double time and a half shift so I ordered a shure SM7 mic for vox. I'm curious if anyone has experience with this mic using the pre-amps on a firepod. Will the pre's be good enough as is or will I dissapointed with the mic as is?
 
It is a great dynamic broadcast vocal mic

It will give you a very good and accurate picture of your voice no matter what. The better the equipment you put it into, the better it will act, but it acts pretty good as is.
Most people like it, some don't (the ones that don't, don't usually like their own voice tho).
 
I suggest you try plugging it in and singing into it and maybe even recording the singing, that way you can listen back and see what you think.

Other people have apparently used it on drums and had a good time.

I'm sure you can do all sorts with it tho really, whatever your imagination allows! :)

Do you have a million dollar acoustic-adjusted room
with $500,000 calibrated monitors and six-figure digital/analog converters???

If so, you may be disappointed.

With what you got, you're not going to tell the difference....

I have some bass traps with some fancy fabric and I made a nice stand for my monitors out of wood looking particle board, does that count?

Yes, the SM7 "will give you a very good and accurate picture" about as much as Alberto Gonzales will testifying while not under oath.

I can tell you from experience that you should be glad you bought the SM7 first instead of the RE20. RE20 is a great mic for specific uses, but (imo) the SM7 beats the RE20 in all categories. I sold my RE20 to raise money for the SM7 and I am glad....... I used to love EV mics, but if you compare them enough side by side with other decent mics, they become less attractive.

Yeah I've used an RE 20, didn't seem to suit my voice too well and I had to give it back to my buddy. It was good for doing live vox for scratch tracks, but I'm hoping the SM7 can fill that gap
 
Best advice I got: Take off the big pop filter, and put your mouth right up against the mike (with the fitted filter still on) and sing away. I set my nose on top of the mike. I've got a big nose. Actually, I saw Liam Gallagher use it just like that in a video of them in the studio. Sounds great. This is my second one, as I sold my first one years ago after not using it "properly" (I used it like an LDC -- 6-12" away from my mouth -- no good, unless you're a really loud singer, then it probably works great).

I'll give that a try, I don't mind the pre's in my firepod for everything else so I guess I'll have to see for myself, I'll let others know once I get it
 
It's a fantastic generalist mic...I use it on vocals, kick, snare, guitar cabs, acoustic...you name it. It's gain hungry though, and it really shines with the right pre, but you won't be sorry you bought it.

I've got both. To my ears the RE-20 is markedly better on kick and bass cabs. There's even some voices where I prefer the RE-20, the SM-7 can almost be too thick on some voices if that makes any sense.
