After 8 years, is it about time to replace the bottom skins as well?

Well, that is a good question. I haven't changed mine in probably about the same amount of time, and mine still "sing" just fine, but heck my batter heads are just as old. :D

I try to change my tops 2 times a year and the bottoms every 4th time...it does make a difference! Of course I play an average of 5 times a week, so that's a lot of smoke and climate changes....

I play regularly, gig often, teach with the same kit and record bands with it. So i end up changing both heads every 2months max. Ususally it's a bit less.

I change out my tom bottom heads every 5-6 years & the snare bottom snare head maybe every 2-3 years. I gig alot and should probably change them more, but I don't feel I've compromised my sound.

my '65 ludwig floor tom had its original bottom head until two months ago. it sounded great. i replaced it with an evans clear resonant head. it doesn't sound as good as before, but i haven't spent much time getting the tuning just right.

in general it's a good idea to change them every year or so, unless you use your kit is in constant use.
