Bottom of the snare mic?

Suggestions for bottom of snare mics???

Whats the budget? I usually use an AKG 414 or a 451. In general sm57's work well also

i've had good success with a sennheiser e835. it has a different mid and high end than an sm57, so it gets the "snap" a little better IMO.

on a home-rec budget, don't be afraid of putting a SP B1 down there, too.....it gets a LOT of bleed, but i like what it does for the snare and kick. even better is putting that one about 6in, aimed at the shell of the snare--talk about a great sounding crack.

on top of the snare, i've had some good success taping an mxl603 to the sm57 and running both.

I've got an old Beyerdynamic Soundstar that works well. I generally point it at the kick beater and get good results that way. I've also heard great things about the Shure SM7 in this application.

Budget is cheap stuff. 1-200. I need to save up for some converters. I was thinking about getting a AT4047 for other reasons, has anyone used this for this application? I was also gonna get a D112 and an e609. would any of these mics do the job well?

A sennheiser 421 with the lows rolled off ( via the mics roll-off ) works well too.

Yeah i tried a 4047. Too much bleed. A dynamic would do you better IMO.

Try a large diaphragm condensor some time pointed straight up at the bottom head. You will probably want to engage the pad. I usually put it about 2 or 3 inches from the head, at a right angle to the snares (as far from the chains as I can). I have never had a problem with too much bleed. In fact, the bottom snare mic is the mic on a kit in which I get the least bleed. I have also become a fan of using the bottom snare mic as a track to help trigger or blend an external drum sample to blend with the top mic. This way you get absolute control of your snare sound but you still get to keep more of that drummers actual sound since you have the top mic and the overheads with the original snare sound in them. I like using the bottom mic to get a little extra top end, a more controllable bottom end, and to help maintain snare volume for those tracks where there is too much hi hat affecting what you want to do with the top mic.

SM57 is really good for the bottom of the snare. Xstatic said about using an AKG C414, but im thinking it might be a tad bright for this? Not positive though. Dynamics for close mics is what I always use.
