i've had good success with a sennheiser e835. it has a different mid and high end than an sm57, so it gets the "snap" a little better IMO.
on a home-rec budget, don't be afraid of putting a SP B1 down there, too.....it gets a LOT of bleed, but i like what it does for the snare and kick. even better is putting that one about 6in, aimed at the shell of the snare--talk about a great sounding crack.
on top of the snare, i've had some good success taping an mxl603 to the sm57 and running both.
