Boss DR880 as a sequencer for Roland SP404SX

I'm new to the world of MIDI and am wondering if it's possible to use the DR880 as a MIDI sequencer so it triggers samples from the SP404SX in conjunction with preset patterns I've made. Is it also possible to use an external Korg MIDI Pad Kontrol plugged into the MIDI in of the DR880 and press single pads to trigger the patterns? Or do both units have limitied MIDI capabilities? I don't have hands-on knowledge of any of those devices, but these things seem feasible. MIDI devices generally have more flexibility than would be obvious at first glance. You'll have to dig into the product manuals to find out if specific operations can be performed. There are also all kinds of integrations you can do with MIDI routing and translation software that may not be possible by connecting the hardware devices directly to one another.
