I have one -

Wouldn't buy it again. Primarily because as a drum machine it's feature poor but too feature rich at the same time. It doesn't have the features you'll really want in a drum machine - lack of velocity sensitivity is a prime example - but does tons of stuff that you - well, at least, I - never use.

Yeah, its cool as a practice "helper," but it's not a pro drum machine and it's not a pro synth or sequencer either.

But, I do use it - primarily to trigger other synths.

I'd trade mine for an Alesis 16 or DM5 in a heartbeat....

Been using a DR-5 for several years and don't like programming it. Also, the drum patterns in mine are fairly lame. But its synths and drums sound authentic and rich. So I play it into my BR-8 as though it were a big keyboard or a set of drums.

Also, you can take it on holiday and write entire songs on the 4-track sequencer. Everything you need in a tiny box. In truth, there's not a hell of a lot of memory. But it has proven adequate for the amount of time I can afford.

I agree.

I've had my DR-5 for over 5 years. While I prefer using the editing features of Cubase or Cakewalk with my JV-1080, the DR-5 has some benefits:

1) Portability. It's smaller than a keyboard workstation and you can write songs in the car, in the park, on a plane... This is a huge benefit for me. The DR-5 has a aux 1/4" input. This allows you to plug your axe in direct and jam along with editable backing tracks. Very useful when you are away from your sequencer and want to practice.

2) Sound. The samples are good quality.


Detriments:

1) A bit of a pain to program. I use computer sequencing, but have never used a workstation. For all I know, the DR-5 might be easier than a workstation.

2) Set sounds. Not very editable when compared to a decent synth.

Summary:

I'd rather use Cubase, but it's a decent little box when I'm away from my PC.
