So i borrowed a d112, a c414, an RE20 and a couple KSM's from a friend. Coupling that with my mxl 603s, my three sm57's, and my studio projects C1, what suggested miking patterns for drums do you guys have? The set has :
one bass drum with a double pedal
snare
tom
floor tom
china cymbal
high hat
ride cymbal
2 crashes

It's for hardcore drums, so i need a great heavy bass drum that still has a proper 'click' to it.

Try..

The RE20 or D112 in the Kick
one SM57 on the Snare (top)
The other two on the Rack Toms
Whichever of the RE20/D112 you didn't use on the Kick on the Floor Tom
The 603Ss as Overheads (anything from XY to spaced pair)
The KSMs as Room Mics
The C1 a few feet in front of the Kick
The 414 under the Snare

Others will fill in the details

I'd experiment with the RE-20 and the D-112 to see which sounded better in the kick. I'd put the 603's in X-Y setup about two drum stick lengths directly above the snare drum for your overheads. It would be interesting to hear the 414 on the snare, if the hi hats aren't too brutal. Otherwise, a 57. I'd put a 57 on the rack tom, and whatever you didn't use in the kick (the D-112 or the RE-20) on the floor tom. And if you didn't use the 414 on the snare, either that or the C-1 out in front of the kick about three feet at about the height of the top of the kick.

I was typing my reply when you posted so I didn't see it. Are you going to sue me for plagiarism now?

Ok, thanks guys. I was thinking that, but the one thing i hadnt considered was the c414 on snare. we'll see. thanks man. by the way, i only have one 603s, and two ksm's. mark, would you think i should try what you said first?

Whoops, sorry. I misread that MXL 603S as 603s'.

Okay, how about

One SM57 on the Snare
Another on the Rack Tom
The RE20 or D112 in the Kick
The RE20 or D112 on the Floor Tom
The KSMs as Overheads
The C1 a few feet in front of the Kick
And the 414 in Fig. 8 combined with the 603S as a Middle-Sides pair for the Room Mics.

Or you could try the 603S as the Front Of Kick mic and combine the 414 and C1 for the MS Pair.

The M/S with the 414 in fig 8 and one of the other condensors is a great idea. You get the bonus of good mono compatibility.

Exalente. Muchas Gracias mis amigos. I'll do that ya'll.
