Sometimes, when I apply a low shelf to a file to reduce the super-low and inaudible bass, the height of the file's peaks increase. Occasionally this will even cause clipping.
Why does this happen? It's counterintuitive to remove frequencies and have the whole thing get louder--*seem* louder I can understand, but *actually get* louder? Is it phase distortion, or something to do with harmonics?
