books about Sonar?

Hello, I am just entering the magical world of computer recording. I have Sonar XL 2.0, read chapter 1, am about to install it and start the tutorials, but I'm wondering, would it be really beneficial to get a book like Sonar Power or even more of a beginner book? I pick up pretty fast, but I am not that experienced with advanced (or even intermediate) mixing/mastering techniques. I know one can find out a lot about that kind of stuff on the boards, but I guess what I'm wondering as well is if there are basic things to be done in Sonar that I wouldn't even be aware of enought to ask w/o having some book that lays it out. At the beginning at least, I am going to be recording solely in audio, but I hope to get into MIDI pretty soon (kind of strapped for $$, that's why I don't just buy the $20 book already).

#2 can you write drum parts with the synths w/o having a separate MIDI controller?

I have both the Home Recording and SONAR Power books by Scott Garrigus. The Homerecording Power was a little beneath me after I went through the Tutorials in SONAR but the SONAR Power gave better examples. I hesitate to recommend it until he revises the book to reflect SONAR 2.0 .

However, I can recommend an excellent volume of books that will get you started (for the next 5 years or so).

The Audio Pro Home Recording Course by Bill Gibson.

It's a 3 volume set, with volume 1 being the most informative and working your way down through the volumes. These volumes come with sample CD's to give you an idea of recordings in pro studios, as well as provide a great set of reference CD's for your monitors.

If MIDI is your main thing, you may want to get Vol. 3 first. It has a pretty good up to date MIDI section.

Yes, you can. You can use virtually any midi-controller to write out drum parts. Or you can use the various tools with-in Sonar (.ie Piano Roll view, Event view) to input your drum data.

The Scott Garigus books are a nice edition to the Sonar manual. I have the Sonar Power and will probably will get Sonar Power 2 soon.

I have the Garigus Cakewalk 9 book, and I would recomend any book of his based just on that.
