Does anyone know why some bolt-on neck guitars have a metal plate on the heel, like a strat, and why some dont, like an rg? Is there any difference in the sound or stability? This is just out of curiousity by the way.

Stay away from anything bolton..............horrible tones :D

Doesn't anyone know if it makes a difference? This is definitely when Light would have come in handy. And don't waste my time saying boltons have bad tone, try to answer the question.

No, it doesn't really make a difference soundwise. Just a different design. Over the years, they figured out how to have a bolt on neck with a more contoured neck heel using individual set in washers and so they did it. It's just a bit less clunky than your typical Fender wood block and plate design. As far as stability, the old Fender design is probably a bit tougher.

Although, just like anything else with guitar, I'm sure someone will say that it has a huge effect on the tone due to the extra half ounce of wood contacting the neck with the plate design, or somesuch nonsense.

I dont think it has an effect either. some people swear that the smallest little stupid things make the biggest difference... some times they do, but more often than not you would never be able to tell a difference. I would even say that the bolts and washers guitars are better because of the less bulky heal. I dont like nasty heals that get in the way.

i owned two Ibanez USA customs, one older and one newer. the older had a neck plate and the newer had the 4 bolts and smooth neckjoint.

if i recall correctly there was actually more wood to wood contact on the newer model because the neck was designed to extend all the way to the end of the fretboard. with the older design, the last few frets were just an overhang. the newer model had the neck slot routed all the way to the neck pickup. the neck joint and the neck pickup holes were connected.

both sounded good, the newer one played better.
