I don't know where you guys are getting a set of bass strings for eight bucks, but hook me up! I never find 'em for less than $25, and a lot of the time it's more like $40.
I've done this dozens of times. I add about 1/4 white vinegar and boil 'em for about 5 minutes. It will make dead strings sound almost new again, but it wears off faster than if they were new.
I actually did this to my upright bass strings and I thought it worked pretty well.
Someone mentioned alchohol up there. I think I heard this is bad for your strings in the long run.
